After a year full of mega-hits, epic franchise conclusions, indie gems, and, well, a whole lot of high grossing Disney films, 2020 looks to be a rather strange year at the movies. With a few possible exceptions, there could very well be zero billion dollar grossing films this year. It seems the studios are saving their major titles for 2021 and beyond. Of course, it’s quite possible movies will overperform at the box office or that movies will come from out of nowhere to surprise audiences. 2019 was a bit of an odd year at the movies. Some hyped releases fell flat, a lot of movies were (in my humble opinion) overrated, there were a fair share of crushing disappointments, numerous good movies, and a smattering of gems. With new streaming services and an influx of content, 2019 was nothing if not an eventful year in TV. 2018 was a weird year for cinema. I saw a lot of rewarding indie films and documentaries, a few clunkers, plenty of good movies, and a number of deeply overhyped movies (I’m looking at you “A Star Is Born,” “Green Book,” and “Hereditary”). Much to my surprise the films from the first half of the year reigned supreme…and most of them were blockbusters! That is very uncommon to say the least. Of course, the back half of the year saw plenty of award worthy winners as well. Below I have posted my personal ten favorite films of the year along with a number of notables.
