2015 was largely an underwhelming year for cinema (that best/worst list will be coming soon), but it was a good year for TV and web series. As per usual, cable and various other platforms (like Netflix) had the best series while the networks were generally a wasteland of tedious dreck. For the most part, I managed to avoid a lot of the “worst” series of the year so that list is fairly small this time around. Anyway, enough of my chatter, on with the list! Continue reading →

The Best And Worst Films And TV/Web Shows Of 2014
2014 may have been a rather gloomy year in the world, but from a film and television perspective, there was much to admire.
As most people know, film studios traditionally save their best films for the end of the year, but 2014 was a strangely top heavy year. The box office may have been down in the summer, but most of my personal favorites came from that season (which is a real rarity to say the least). Likewise, a majority of the best new and returning TV series came early in the year with the fall primarily being filled with little more than network tripe.
Anyway, enough of my yammering, on with the list! Continue reading →

After an underwhelming 2012 film year, 2013 was a definite improvement. While there weren’t a ton of films I would consider great, I did see a fair number of good ones. Yes, a majority of the “mainstream” films were clunkers (as they usually are), but there were a surprising amount of indie, VOD, and documentary gems released this year.
Over on the TV and web series side, it proved to be a solid year for these mediums as well. New shows like “Bates Motel” and “Orange Is the New Black” wowed audiences, returning favorites (such as “Game of Thrones” and “Doctor Who”) continued to have viewers glued to their screens, and a few shows ended with a bang (namely “Breaking Bad” and “Tron Uprising”).
So, without further adieu, here is my annual list! Continue reading →

The Best And Worst Films And TV Shows Of 2012
While some film fans and film critics adored 2012, I felt the year was largely comprised of bloated blockbusters and underwhelming art films. To me, a majority of the films (while often well made) felt distant and never really connected with me personally. Last year, I was overwhelmed with profoundly moving films such as “Moneyball,” “50/50,” “Hugo,” and “Midnight in Paris.” Now, that’s not to say 2012 didn’t have its highlights because it did. No one can deny that 2012’s cinematic offerings weren’t varied as the cinemas (and VODs) were flooded with everything from a talking teddy bear and a Bengal tiger to an extraordinary rescue mission and video game makers.
Meanwhile, on the television front, serialized entertainment once again reigned supreme. Whether I was witnessing the further decline of Walter White on “Breaking Bad” or seeing the astonishing wildfire sequence in “Game Of Thrones,” it’s clear that television is as exciting as it has ever been.
So, without further adieu, here is my annual list! Continue reading →

For the past few years, television had undoubtedly surpassed film in terms of quality art and entertainment. In 2011, however, the opposite occurred. TV took a serious slide this year while cinema flourished. Continue reading →
