Portland Retro Gaming Expo 2013 Review

Star Wars and Demolition Man Pinball Machines

In the modern gaming world, it’s all about big named developers, yearly sports game updates, fast paced first person shooters, and hotly anticipated sequels (“Grand Theft Auto 5” is a prime example). Back in the old days of gaming, however, it was more about accessible but challenging games, unique characters and ideas that you’d only find in video games and creative game mechanics. It’s no wonder then that many gamers still find themselves returning to the games they grew up with. Thankfully, this niche group of retro gamers has a place (or mecha if you will) to attend in Portland. That place? The yearly Portland Retro Gaming Expo. Continue reading

The Power Of Love- Now Available

The Power of Love DVD

If you’re looking for an inspirational drama about relationships, faith, and love, you needn’t look any further than Maddox Entertainment’s latest feature film release “The Power of Love.” The film (which stars Vivica A. Fox) is a low budget indie film centered around an author (PJ Payton) on a disc jockey’s radio show. While on the radio program promoting her book, PJ also takes calls from people who have stories about overcoming troubles and obstacles through their faith. In this respect, ‘Power’ is almost anthological as the film cuts to the callers stories.

As of today (September 24th), “The Power of Love” is available to purchase on DVD (sorry folks, no Blu-ray release for this title).  Among the extra features on the DVD are a “The Power of Love” trailer, 2 minutes of deleted scenes, and nearly 3 minutes of “Behind The Scenes” footage of various cast members telling people to watch the movie.

Turner Classic Movies: The Story Of Film: An Odyssey

If you’re a fan of film history or are a major film buff, I thought I’d alert you to some programming that Turner Classic Movies (or TCM for short) will be airing. On every Monday from September 2nd to December 9th, TCM will be airing 1 part of their 15 week documentary series titled “The Story of Film: An Oddssey.” The weekly documentaries will be accompanied by films from a certain time period as well. For example, week 1’s “The Story of Film” will delve into the birth of cinema and will be accompanied by airings of classic films like “A Trip To The Moon” and “Intolerance.” In week 15, “The Story of Film” will end with a piece on modern cinema along with airings of groundbreaking works like “Russian Ark” and “Memories Of Murder.” It should be noted that every Tuesday from Sept. 3rd to Oct. 29th will also feature repeats of that week’s “The Story of Film” along with a host of films being played from the era that is touched upon in that week’s ‘Story’ segment. For some strange reason, November 4th to December 9th will not have repeats airing on the Tuesdays that follow those dates. If you want a full list of the films that will be playing, go to http://www.tcm.com for more details.

If you’re looking for some recommendations on what films to tune into, might I recommend “Never Weaken” (Sept. 9), “Singin’ In The Rain” (Oct. 1), “Rebel Without A Cause,” (Oct. 8), “The 400 Blows” (Oct. 14), “Enter The Dragon,” (Nov. 11), and “Reservoir Dogs” (Dec. 2).

The Best And Worst Films And TV Shows Of 2012

Argo       Game Of Thrones        ParaNorman      Sherlock

The Best And Worst Films And TV Shows Of 2012

While some film fans and film critics adored 2012, I felt the year was largely comprised of bloated blockbusters and underwhelming art films. To me, a majority of the films (while often well made) felt distant and never really connected with me personally. Last year, I was overwhelmed with profoundly moving films such as “Moneyball,” “50/50,” “Hugo,” and “Midnight in Paris.” Now, that’s not to say 2012 didn’t have its highlights because it did. No one can deny that 2012’s cinematic offerings weren’t varied as the cinemas (and VODs) were flooded with everything from a talking teddy bear and a Bengal tiger to an extraordinary rescue mission and video game makers.

Meanwhile, on the television front, serialized entertainment once again reigned supreme. Whether I was witnessing the further decline of Walter White on “Breaking Bad” or seeing the astonishing wildfire sequence in “Game Of Thrones,” it’s clear that television is as exciting as it has ever been.

So, without further adieu, here is my annual list! Continue reading
