Top 10 Films Of 2021

After a year that was light in cinema, 2021 had plenty to offer. There were musicals, westerns, comic films, dramas, horror films, and everything in between. Below I have listed my 10 personal favorites alongside some notable gems. Note: I do have a few films left to see and will adjust my list if any of them happen to make it. On with the list!
1. CODA- A surprising, emotional, and rewarding family drama.
2. Dune- Dennis Villenueve nailed this adaptation of Frank Hebert’s sci-fi masterpiece.
3. The Power Of The Dog- Jane Campion delivers her best film yet with this dark western.
4. Tick, Tick…Boom!- It was quite the year for musicals, but Lin-Manuel Miranda’s directorial debut adaptation of the biographical musical about art and dreams soared the highest.
5. The Mitchells Vs. The Machines- The year’s best animated film was this lively, creative and funny tale about technology, family, and filmmaking (among other subjects).
6. Pig- Nicolas Cage gave his best performance in years in this compelling drama.
7. In The Heights- Another musical? Yep. Director Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of the Broadway musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegria Hudes was a radiant story about love, life, connections, community, and dreams.
8. Nobody- I never knew that I needed an action movie starring Bob Odenkirk, Christopher Lloyd and RZA, but here we are.
9. Judas And The Black Messiah- It may have qualified for the 2021 Oscars, but this intense biodrama about Fred Hampton actually came out in 2021.
10. Godzilla Vs. Kong- I may be biased as a Godzilla and Kong fan, but to be honest, this movie was everything we needed in early 2021. After 2020’s lack of cinema, finally being able to see a blockbuster that delivered like this felt cathartic. Also, it’s easily the best Vs. film to date (and the weirdest).
Notables (in no order): “Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry,” “Stowaway,” “Dream Horse,” “Black Widow,” “Fear Street Trilogy,” “Stillwater,” “Halloween Kills,” “The Last Duel,” “Eternals,” “Cruella,” “Finch,” “Flee,” “Worth,” “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” “Language Lessons,” “Old Henry,” and “Red Rocket”
