Top 10 Films Of 2020

2020 was a rough year for cinema. Not only were theaters closed for a majority of the year due to the pandemic, but many films were pushed to 2021. You really had to know where to look for good films this past year due to strange release schedules, abrupt VOD releases and movies going straight to streaming services (of which there are many now). Below I have singled out my 10 favorites along with a plethora of notables. On with the list!

1. Love And Monsters- 2020’s best kept secret was this multi-genre gem that feels like the perfect movie for now.

2. Soul- A surprisingly adult and intellectual Pixar film. It’s amazing that the animation studio continues to put out masterpieces for 25 years strong now.

3. Beastie Boys Story- Spike Jonze’s part stage show, part documentary was an insightful and moving look into the history of the legendary Beastie Boys.

4. Hamilton- I am not going to miss my shot…to put this on my top 10. One of the most celebrated musicals of the past 20 years gets a splendid Broadway recording for all to enjoy forever.

5. What Did Jack Do?- Technically this is a 2017 short, but it was not released until 2020. At any rate, I could watch David Lynch interrogate a talking monkey all day.

6. Sound Of Metal- A moving character drama with an award worthy performance by Riz Ahmed.

7. First Cow- Short on story, but full of rewarding character moments.

8. Come To Daddy- A twisty and deranged father-son horror movie.

9. Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets- In a year full of memorable documentaries, this one about a closing bar and its faithful community of patrons might be the best.

10. Let Them All Talk- A return to form for Steven Soderbergh.

Notables (in no order): “Feels Good Man,” “The Godfather Coda: The Death Of Michael Corleone,” “Zappa,” “Possessor Uncut,” “Host,” “Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made,” “Onward,” “Shirley,” “Howard,” “Antebellum,” “The Orange Years: The Nickelodeon Story,” “Ammonite” “Bacurau,” “Crip Camp” “Another Round,” and “The Prom.”
