Star Wars: The Complete Saga Blu-ray Is Out Now!
The wait is over! All 6 Star Wars have finally hit Blu-ray. Fans have the option of buying all 6 films together in the Complete Saga collection or buying each trilogy separately. The sets feature a plethora of extras including never before seen deleted scenes from all 6 films such as Tosche Station, Cantina Rough Cut, Utapu Chase Animatics, Kashyyyk Attack and Order 66 Animatic, and Vader’s Arrival and Reaching Out To Luke. Also included are new changes to the films such as new Darth Vader dialogue in ROTJ, blinking Ewoks, a new CGI Yoda in “The Phantom Menace,” a revised Ben Kenobi Krayt Dragon call, and more.
Having picked up the set myself, I can say that it was well worth the wait. The picture quality is outstanding, the sound mixes are some of the best I have ever heard on Blu-ray, and the extras are first rate. You definitely get your money’s worth with this set.
On a side note, I would also recommend picking up Lego Star Wars: The Padawan Menace which is only available at Walmart. It’s a fantastic 22 minute animated one-off special that will appeal to children, adults, and “Star Wars” fans.

Digital Entertainment Group announces 3D titles for the holiday season
In a move that is long overdue, DEG announced a boatload of titles for starving 3D system owners, who up until now, have had only a few titles available. Most of the titles are computer animated movies, with some HD documentaries also available. Overall, I’m not that impressed with the titles. The list, including some of the first from studios like Disney, should address some consumers concerns about title availability, although some manufactures continue to promote “exclusive” titles, only available when purchasing a certain 3D system, a move which really doesn’t help the overall 3D adoption situation. Errol and Olivia:Ego and Obsession in Golden Era Hollywood by Robert Matzen
We usually don’t write book reviews here at the corner but film buffs will be delighted at this just released coffee table sized book about two of Hollywood’s biggest stars; Errol Flynn and Olivia De Haviland, still going strong in her 90’s. The author Robert Matzen, is no stranger to Hollywood or Flynn: he wrote a previous book about the infamous house Flynn built in Hollywood,, entitled “Errol Flynn Slept Here”.
The book delves deeply into both stars backgrounds and their encounters both on and off the screen; carefully examining their personal and professional relationships in all their films together, from Flynn’s first starring role in Captain Blood to their last, touching scene in “They Died With Their Boots On” an historically inaccurate accounting of Custer’s Last Stand. Along the way, we are treated to some of the best stories surrounding both stars, their squabbles, and how De Haviland has since gone on to become the Grand Dame of cinema. Continue reading
Fox and MGM rerelease movie adaptations of literary classics
In a marketing scheme, Fox and MGM have rereleased dvds based on literary classics. Titles include “The Grapes of Wrath”, “Moby Dick”, “Of Mice and Men”, “Henry V”, and others made by the studios over the years. What you should know is that while these films are great, none of them were remastered or redone for this series. MGM/Fox has simply included a new laminated bookmark over the original packaging. Most disappointing for me was the “Moby Dick” release, which has never been released in its original aspect ratio and deserves better. A great cast led by Gregory Peck, Richard Baseheart and Orson Welles, directed by John Huston, with screenplay by Huston and Ray Bradbury, this 1956 release is the best adaptation of the Herman Melville classic. Other than a trailer, this disc is bare bones.
Also worth mentioning in this rerelease list is “The Grapes Of Wrath”, John Steinbeck’s accounting of one family during the Dust Bowl years with stellar performances from Henry Fonda and Jane Darwell, directed by John Ford and produced by Darryl F. Zanuck. This one has commentaries, newsreel footage and a restored picture. (It was restored for the original dvd release, not for this rerelease).
If you don’t have these two dvds in your collection, now is a good time to pick them up. Same low price (under $15 each) and heck, you get a free bookmark.
Added note by Nick:
As I have received the MGM DVD “Richard III” for review, I thought I would chime in with my two cents on this repackaging issue. Personally, I find these re-issues to be pointless because the titles are not in demand at all. Additionally, I have to wonder what’s the point in re-releasing catalogue titles such as this one with an exclusive bookmark? If MGM wanted to re-issue these titles, why not just add more extras, update the transfers, or in this case of this disc, get rid of the flipper disc and just have the option of playing the film in widescreen or fullscreen at the menu screen like most discs these days. Now, I’m not knocking the film itself. ‘Richard’ is an interesting spin on William Shakespeare’s classic play set during an alternate 1930’s period in Britain. Ian McKellen in particular gives a riveting, tour-de-force performance as the title character, but there’s also a great supporting cast featuring the likes of Robert Downey Jr. (Lord Rivers), Annette Bening (Queen Elizabeth), Jim Broadbent (Duke Of Buckingham), Kristin Scott Thomas (Queen Anne), and Maggie Smith (Duchess Of York). It’s a must see for Shakespeare fans, but if you already own it, there’s no need to double-dip here.
