The Robot Chicken Walking Dead Special DVD Review

Robot

“The Robot Chicken Walking Dead Special” is lacking in the laugh department.

In the 22 minute “The Robot Chicken Walking Dead Special” (AKA “The Robot Chicken Walking Dead Special: Look Who’s Walking”), viewers get a wrap around story of the nerd character visitign a Walking Dead museum that was put up after the zombie outbreak has been cured. While thered, the nerd bumps into Carl who tells the real story of what happened. From there on out, the special jumps back and forth between the events at the museum and a series of sketches that involve Shane and Laurie, zombie memories, a Merle musical number, a unicorn, Dale and his RV, Herschel’s drinking problem, Carl, a Terminus musical number, zombie POV, Negan dance, a dead Glenn sitcom, Snoopy, a Superman esque origin for Lucille, and more. As an added bonus, the special contains the voice talents of all of your favorite past and present cast members such as Norman Reedus, Danai Gurira, Andrew Lincoln, Steven Yeun, Michael Rooker, Lauren Cohan, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Jon Bernthal, Melissa McBride, etc.

After amusing “Star Wars” and DC Comics specials, another franchise centric special seemed to be a given so it was not a surprise to see the popular “The Walking Dead” TV series get the “Robot Chicken” treatment. Unfortunately, this one lacks the humor of the frequently hilarious specials that came before. While fans of the zombie series may enjoy some of the special’s deep cuts, much of the sketches fall flat or contain tired raunchy jokes and or gags (oh look, zombies biting crotches). Personally, it felt like there were a lot of missed opportunities here. There were many moments in the series that could have provided a great jumping off point for comedy that simply didn’t exist in this special.

The special isn’t a complete dud, however, as there are a few genuinely funny moments. The “Look at the flowers” sketch extends beyond the franchise in clever ways, the ongoing Carl and his eye hole bits are arguably the highlight of the entire special, and the climactic “The Talking Dead” sketch was amusing enough.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: Widescreen. How does it look? The stop-motion animation looks splendid even on DVD. Note: This title will also be available alongside the DVD March 27, 2018.

Audio Track: Dolby Digital 5.1. How does it sound? The dialogue, music, and sound FX sound crisp and clear to this reviewer.

Extras: 8 deleted scenes with intros by writers, the extra “Bawkward” proposes what the robot chicken would sound like as a zombie, the bonus feature “Sketches To Die For” contains cast and crew members talking about their favorite sketches in the special, the “Behind The Screams” extra has crew members talking about their jobs while being scared by a zombie, “Inside Robot Chicken The Walking Dead: Look Who’s Walking” is a behind-the-scenes featurette on how the special came about and how it was made, and 2 commentaries (one with Matt Senreich, Scott M. Gimple, Robert Kirkman, Tom Sheppard and Seth Green and the other commentary with Seth Green, Josh McDermitt, Tom Root and Tom Sheppard) that are more entertaining than the special.
