They Will Kill You 4K UHD Review

“They Will Kill You” is a strange mixture of better films.
Penned by Kirill Sokolov and Alex Litvak, “They Will Kill You” is an action horror comedy. The story begins with sisters Asia and Maria trying to flee their scumbag father. Their father catches up to them, but Asia shoots him dead, is imprisoned, and separated from her sister. 10 years pass and Asia ventures into a building known as The Virgil which houses wealthy individuals. Asia poses as a maid to gain access, but her real mission is to find Maria. The now well trained and combative Asia does indeed find Maria, but she gets more than she bargained for when she discovers the inhabitants of The Virgil are more than they appear to be and that both Maria and Asia are in grave danger.
I know I’m being a little vague on the plot, but there’s a good reason for that. “They Will Kill You” is the type of movie that works better the less you know about it as it’s filled with twists and turns. The best way to describe this movie is a weird mix between “Kill Bill,” “Rosemary’s Baby,” “Evil Dead,” “The Raid,” and “Ready Or Not.” Strangely enough, this movie was released a mere week after “Ready Or Not 2: Here I Come” although this movie certainly fares better than that lackluster sequel. If you’re wondering how you get this movie out of that combination of films all I can say is “You’ll see.” It feels like director Kirill Sokolov threw a bunch of favorite films and or inspirations into a pot to create this project. It’s a decidedly strange movie filled with gore, violence, body parts, and, yes, even Patricia Arquette fighting with a possessed pig head on. I never thought I’d type that sentence out, but here we are.
In terms of the quality of the film, it’s not going to win any awards and it is bound to have a niche audience. It feels like it could become a cult favorite among a certain group of film fans. There’s not a lot going on story wise here as it’s very surface level (even with the twists). Likewise, much of the film is comprised of long battle scenes which get a bit tedious after a bit (although the presence of practical effects and make-up are a welcome set). For the most part, it just feels like a lesser version of the films it will undoubtedly remind viewers of.
The film gets a much needed boost from the cast featuring Zazie Beetz, Patricia Arquette, Heather Graham, Tom Felton, Myha’la, and Paterson Joseph. Beetz goes all out here in a big action heavy starring role. She’s clearly game for anything here. This seems to be a very odd role for Patricia Arquette, but maybe she wanted to do something no one would expect. In that it’s a resounding success.
Video/Audio:
Presentation: 2.20:1 2160p. How does it look? The film looks positively sharp on 4K.
Audio Track: Dolby Atmos. How does it sound? The Atmos track delivers thunderous action (not an exaggeration).
