10 Recommended Music Biopics

With “Michael” now in theaters, now felt like the proper time to celebrate music biopics. This isn’t meant to be a list of the absolute best, but rather my personal recommendations in no order (some of which cross genres).
1. The Buddy Holly Story- For whatever reason this one never gets enough attention in this day and age. It’s worth seeing just for Gary Busey’s award worthy performance alone.
2. Nowhere Boy- It’s more about John Lennon’s life and family than it is his music, but this is another under-the-radar biopic that deserves much more attention.
3. The Runaways- Before Joan Jett had a solo career, she was in The Runaways with Cherrie Currie. This underseen film sheds light on the band’s short-lived but influential career.
4. Coal Miner’s Daughter- You don’t even have to be a country music fan to be wowed by Sissy Spacek as Loretta Lynn.
5. Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story- This one is a bit of a cheat. Technically it is a music biopic. The musician just happens to be fictional. This is a hilarious spoof of music biopics that also happens to feature great songs.
6. Ray- Jamie Foxx completely transformed his entire career with his astonishing performance as Ray Charles.
7. Tick, Tick…Boom!- This combination musical and biopic about playwright Jonathan Larson is easily one of the best movie musicals of the past 20 years.
8. The Benny Goodman Story- A deeply underrated film about the life of the jazz clarinetist and bandleader.
9. Straight Outta Compton- Director F. Gary Gray brought the story of N.W.A. to life in this superb music biopic.
10. Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere- Audiences were likely expecting a standard biopic on Bruce Springsteen’s life and career. Honestly, I’m glad we didn’t get that. Instead, we got a personal story about a specific time in his life and how he channeled his pain into his art.
