Ranking The Star Trek Series- 2023

With “Star Trek: Picard” season 3 starting next week, now felt like the appropriate time to re-rank the Trek series. It’s been nearly 3 years since the last ranking and since then there have been 3 new series along with new seasons of “Star Trek: Picard” and “Star Trek: Discovery.”

1. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine- If you know you know. This is the best Trek series. It’s bold, ambitious, and layered. It’s like a space opera novel in Trek form.

2. Star Trek: The Next Generation- The early seasons are a bit rough around the edges, but there’s no denying this series really came into its own and established itself as a sci-fi classic.

3. Star Trek: The Original Series- The influential original series offered up intellectual and groundbreaking storytelling for not only TV, but the sci-fi genre as a whole.

4. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds- The best new Trek series since DS9. Not only is it a return to the roots of Trek, but it’s an episodic Trek series! Season 2 can’t come fast enough.

5. Star Trek: Prodigy- It’s hard to believe, but this Nickelodeon/Paramount+ animated series is a winner. Much like “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” this series has something for fans of every age. It also acts as a sort of “Star Trek: Voyager” sequel which is a welcome surprise for Trekkies and Trekkers everywhere.

6. Star Trek: Enterprise- Despite its flaws, time has been pretty kind to Enterprise. It’s an underrated series that deserves another look (or a first time watch).

7. Star Trek: Discovery- There’s been something to enjoy with each season of DISCO (season 2 especially). The big problem with this series is that it still hasn’t found its identity. Every season is a reinvention which makes it hard to know what this show is all about at times. It doesn’t help that some of the best characters have had reduced roles (no spoilers here).

8. Star Trek: Voyager- Captain Janeway, The Doctor and Tom Paris are genuinely likable characters, but the series was let down by lackluster writing.

9. Star Trek: Picard- Season 1 was uneven but had some rewarding moments. Season 2, on the other hand, was arguably the worst Trek to date. There’s a big chance at redemption though with season 3 which is essentially a big TNG reunion.

10. Star Trek: The Animated Series- A stiff but admirable continuation of TOS.

11. Star Trek: Lower Decks- This adult animated series has a devoted fanbase, but the fast talking “Rick And Morty” style take on Trek just doesn’t work for me personally. The numerous references to Trek canon are appreciated though.
