Z Blu-ray Review
“Z” is an uninspired horror movie.
Directed and co-written by Brandon Christensen alongside writer Colin Minihan, “Z” revolves around a family of 3- parents Beth and Kevin and their son josh. Josh is a quiet loner kid who develops an imaginary friend named Z. At first this isn’t of much concern, but Josh begins to act increasingly more violent. Is there really some sort of creepy imaginary friend? Is it somehow linked to the family? All is revealed in the end.
Not to be confused with the 1969 Costa-Gavras film of the same name, 2019’s “Z” is an indie horror film that doesn’t bring anything new to the table. Creepy kids and creepy imaginary friends have been a part of the horror realm before and I’m sure they will continue to be from here on out. “Z” really does suffer from being a rather generic film that relies heavily on jump scares. Luckily, there are a few jump scares involving Z that at least deliver in the horror department. That tub one in particular was quite effective. Outside of that, there’s not much here other than a “Paranormal Activity” esque plot involving Beth, some questionable plotting, a complete lack of any chemistry between Kevin and Beth (seriously, why are they even married?), and some of the most bizarre edits I’ve seen (the eavesdrop to a dead character baffled me).
Performance wise, genre veteran Keegan Connor Tracy does her best here as the tortured mother Beth. She certainly commits to the role and makes the whole project at least watchable.
Video/Audio:
Presentation: 1.78:1 1080p. How does it look? Expect a nice clean hi-def transfer.
Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? This is an effective 5.1 track.
The lone extra is a free 30 day trial for Shudder.
