Toy Story 4 Blu-ray Review

With the fourth installment, the Toy Story franchise is still one of the best around.

Describing the plot of “Toy Story 4” in great detail wouldn’t be fair to readers and viewers. Part of the joy of the Toy Story franchise is going on the journey with Woody, Buzz, and company. What I will say is that the story involves Bonnie and her family (and her toys) going on a road trip, an antique store, the re-appearance of a past character (Bo Peep), Woody pondering his purpose in life, and a host of new characters like Forky, Duke Caboom, Giggle McDimples, and carnival toys Ducky and Bunny.

When I heard there was going to be a fourth installment in the TS franchise, I was a little hesitant. After the third and arguably best film felt in the series, it felt like the series had been given a proper ending (although there was certainly room for more stories to tell). However, given that the quality of the Toy Story series has never wavered, I felt pretty confident that a fourth entry would be another winner. I’m happy to report that “Toy Story 4” delivers AND that you will be hard pressed not to be overcome by emotion.

Simply put, Pixar’s “Toy Story 4” is one of the best films of 2019. Like its three predecessors, it has everything you could want from great cinema. There’s humor galore, surprises for longtime fans, an emotional and mature story, and a plethora of characterization (especially with Woody). Again, without entering spoiler territory too much, this is very much Woody’s movie. He really grows as a character here as he makes big life altering decisions, rekindles his relationship with Bo Peep, and tries to figure out his purpose in life as well as his future. As per usual, Tom Hanks gives so much depth to the character with his vocal performance.

One of the things fans and viewers have been talking about the most with TS4 is the new characters. They’re all utterly delightful. Forky may look weird, but the character has a unique and satisfying arc. The Evel Kneivel esque Duke Caboom (perfectly voiced by Keanu Reeves) is the clear fan favorite and it’s not hard to see why. Heck, even the “villain” (no spoilers) has a deeply compelling arc that will leave you feeling a wide range of emotions over the course of the entire film.

Presentation: 2.39:1 1080p. How does it look? Come on, you know this transfer is aces. Few films look better on Blu-ray than Pixar titles. “Toy Story 4” is no exception.

Audio Track: 7.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? The score, action, sound FX, and dialogue are as sharp as can be.
