10 Random Recommendations

RiffTrax Shorts- Shorts Assemble! DVD True Story, Swear To GodBabylon 5.jpg

Instead of doing a specific top 10 list today, I thought I’d put out a list of random things I love that I would like to recommend to others. These are not movie exclusive recommendations as I have included a TV show, podcasts, a comic book series, audio dramas, an album, a card game, comedic commentary tracks, and even a sports league! There’s not much more for me to add here so on with the list!

  1. Babylon 5- Yes, I know the show has been off the air for many years now, but I finally sat down and watched the entire series last year. I am ashamed that I did not watch it sooner as it is everything a space opera should aspire to be.
  1. True Story, Swear To God- With Valentine’s Day on the horizon, it felt like a good time to shed some light on this extremely underrated comic book series. It’s a very touching, personal and romantic story from writer/artist Tom Beland.
  1. RiffTrax- For sheer comedic value, nothing makes me laugh more than a RiffTrax commentary track. Whether they’re taking on cheesy movies like “Birdemic” or mocking obscure short films like “Zlateh The Goat,” “Mystery Science Theater 3000” veterans Bill Corbett, Mike Nelson, and Kevin Murphy are, simply put, the most consistent entertainers around.
  1. What Say You? Podcast- Brian Quinn and Sal Vulcano of “Impractical Jokers” and “The Tenderloins” fame host this podcast in which they discuss everything from killer honey bottles to the “Fast and Furious” franchise. You never know what they will talk about and that’s what keeps you tuning in.
  1. Big Finish Doctor Who Audio Dramas- For those that think “Doctor Who” is limited to TV and books; think again. The good folks at Big Finish have been producing high quality “Doctor Who” audio drama entertainment for 17 years now. If you want to hear audio adventures featuring classic Doctors (4-8), new era characters (River Song, War Doctor, and soon to be 10th Doctor), or new Torchwood stories, BF has you covered.
  1. Free Enterprise- Robert Meyer Burnett and Mark A. Altman’s geek movie masterpiece never gets enough love so I had to mention it here. This is and always will be one of my all-time favorite films.
  1. MLS- Everyone knows NFL, MLB, NHL and NBA, but Major League Soccer is a sports league that flies under the radar. While the beautiful game of soccer is admittedly not for everyone, this growing league holds a special place in my heart (Go Timbers!). If you’re looking for something to watch in the NFL offseason or are interested in watching more soccer/futbol, give MLS a chance. The 2016 season kicks off March 6, 2016.
  1. Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny Soundtrack- This might seem VERY random, but I have had the D’s “Beelzeboss” stuck in my head for days on end now so it felt appropriate for the list. Honestly though, I could list any of their 3 albums here as I love them all.
  1. Marvel Legendary- I’m relatively new to the ever expanding board and card game scene, but this Marvel Universe centric card game from Upper Deck is far and away one of my favorite games.
  1. Kaijucast- Fans of Godzilla, Gamera, and various other giant monster films will no doubt get a kick out of this Kaiju centric podcast.
