Deli Man Blu-ray

Deli Man Blu-ray

“Deli Man” is an interesting documentary that might have worked better as a short.

Comprised of interviews with authors, celebs (like Jerry Stiller and Larry King) and restaurant industry professionals, “Deli Man” is a love letter to delicatessens. While this might seem like an odd subject to base a documentary film on, it’s surprising how much information is relayed throughout the 91 minute runtime. Granted, “Deli Man” probably could have been a short documentary instead, but regardless, there’s still plenty to absorb here.

Through the interviewees, director Erik Greenberg Anjou delves into the history of delis, the ties they have to American immigrants, the cultural and generational importance they have to Jewish communities and families, and the reasons why delis are fading from existence after their heyday in the 30’s and 40’s. The director also showcases several beloved modern delis including Hobby’s Deli, Carnegie Deli, 2nd Avenue Deli, Wise Sons Deli, Caplansky’s Deli, and last, but not least, Kenny and Ziggy’s.

On the subject of Kenny and Ziggy’s, a good portion of the documentary is devoted to restaurant owner Ziggy Gruber and his undying love of deli culture. Even though he can come off as a bit pompous at times, there’s no denying the fact that his passion is infectious.

As with any food based movie, I should warn viewers that they will constantly be hungry watching this. The meats, soups, pickles, breads, hot dogs, and pastries presented here look incredibly delicious. It’s like a foodie’s paradise.

Presentation: 1.78:1 1080p. How does it look? While the transfer is not perfect, this is still a fine looking docu.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? The interview subjects and music are crisp and clear throughout.
