Shark Battlefield DVD Review

Shark Battlefield DVD

“Shark Battlefield” is a cheesy BBC Earth program.

No doubt timed for release amidst the “Sharknado 2” and 2014 Shark Week craze, “Shark Battlefield” is a 50 minute special that is part of the BBC Animal Battlefield series. This particular program follows a pregnant female tiger shark as she navigates the Pacific Island waters in search of food for her and her unborn babies. As is the case in the wild, the tiger shark faces many dangers and obstacles such as other sharks and stringrays. While that story is the primary focus, there are a few other segments here involving a Hammerhead Shark, fish, turtles, and birds.

For those expecting a high quality nature program like “Planet Earth,” think again. While the state of the art camera footage is certainly noteworthy, it is overshadowed by poor production values. Rather than just presenting a straight forward nature show, the makers of this stylized “Shark Battlefield” cram in flashy and clumsy edits, needless CGI and shark vision POVs, techno music, loud sound f/x, and over-the-top narration by Sanjeev Bhaskar. It all ends up being an infuriating mess which is a shame because the subject matter is involving.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: Widescreen. How does it look? Whether you are watching undersea shots or breathtaking overhead island shots, “Shark Battlefield” generally looks spectacular. The CGI stuff, on the other hand, is an entirely different story.

Audio Track: Dolby Digital Stereo. How does it sound? While the sound f/x and narration leave much to be desired, the actual sound quality is solid.

Extras include ads for “Hidden Kingdoms,” Tauck, and BBC Earth.
