Bound Blu-ray Review

“Bound” is a stylish debut from the Wachowskis.

The plot: Corky, an ex-con who did prison time, is brought back into the crime-world when she decides to do a heist with her new lover (Violet). The job? To steal money from the mob and Violet’s mafia boyfriend Caesar. As with just about any heist, however, the job is easier said than done as it proves to not quite go as planned.

Before they made the “Matrix” trilogy and “Cloud Atlas,” Andy and Lana Wachowski debuted on the film scene with this sexy little thriller starring Gina Gershon, Jennifer Tilly, Joe Pantoliano, and Christopher Meloni (who are all in top form here). The Wachowskis’ trademark creative style and shot selections are definitely on display here which is what sets this claustrophobic heist thriller apart from others.

It should be noted that if you’ve seen “Bound” before, it’s certainly not as fresh on the second viewing. In fact, it looks and feels a bit rough around the edges 17 years after its premiere. Still, considering the Wachowskis managed to create an intense movie that is primarily set in two apartment rooms, it’s an impressive debut nonetheless.

Note: Viewers have the option of playing the unrated and R rated cuts of the film.

Presented in 1.78:1 1080p, the picture quality of “Bound” is somewhat of a mixed bag. The print is quite grainy and contains some dirt specs, but the colors are infinitely sharper.

The Dolby Digital 2.0 audio track is a bit flat, but it’s acceptable.
