Aim High Season 1 DVD Review

“Aim High” is a surprisingly enjoyable web series.

“Aim High” is a 6 episode web series that revolves around a high school student named Nick Green who just happens to lead a double life as a U.S. agent. The bulk of the series revolves around Nick trying to avoid death from an angry mob group (that Nick killed members of) and a pissed off ex-KGB killer named Boris. Other key subplots involve Nick’s love interest and his journalist friend/sidekick (Marcus) who knows his secret.

When I first heard about this web series, I figured it would just be a wimpy, watered down teen series that was trying to capitalize on the fame of “Twilight” star Jackson Rathbone. However, as it turns out, the series is anything but wimpy.

“Aim High” actually begins violently with Nick killing mob members in Chicago and, from there on out, the series turns out to be a pleasantly action packed and humor filled ride. Granted, the “Ferris Beuller’s Day Off” meets “Chuck” meets “The Bourne Identity” premise isn’t exactly original (nor is the “high schooler masquerading as a hero” routine), but the cast makes the show work.

Jackson Rathbone is both charismatic and funny as the lead character. It’s nice to see him show off his acting chops in a non-“Twilight” role for a change. Rebecca Mader (“Lost”), Greg Germann (“Ally McBeal”), Nick Swardson (“Grandma’s Boy”), Chris Wylde (“Strip Mall”), Johnny Pemberton (“21 Jump Street”) and Clancy Brown (you name it) all shine in supporting roles as well. Brown in particular seems to be having a blast playing the villainous Boris.

Summary: “Aim High” is better than you would expect it to be. Give it a shot.

The web series, which is presented in widescreen, looks like a TV show. The cinematography and production values are quite impressive for a web series

The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track contains crisp and clear sounding music, sound f/x, and action.

* “All Better Now” music video (as briefly seen in “Aim High”).
* “Short Feature: Video Yearbook”- Fairview High School Video Yearbook containing faux interviews with characters from the show.
* “Behind The Scenes: Meet Nick Green” contains cast and crew interviews and discussions about the character of Nick Green.
