James And The Giant Peach Blu-Ray Special Edition

James and The Giant Peach Blu-Ray coverThe combination Disney, Tim Burton, and Roald Dahl is a strange yet delightful film, with stop motion animation, live action and computer graphics.  Its a real treat for the eyes and even better on blu-ray. As with most Burton film’s and Dahl stories, although a children’s story, the tale has its darker moments so younger kids should probably skip it. The 79 minute film took ages to make because of the stop action sequences.  Parts of the film look grainy as a result but this is also a typical characteristic of all stop motion animation. The blu-ray picture and DTS-MA soundtrack are up to the usual high quality standards set by Disney.

Voice actors include Richard Dreyfuss,Susan Sarandon, SImon Cowell and Jane Leeves, with music from Randy Newman.  The story involves James as he explores the insides of a Giant Peach which has sprouted up in his garden.  Inside, James meets many unusal characters-kind of like a male Alice In Wonderland adventure.

This blu-ray set from Disney contains features such as Disney Live and a game, and the dvd has a making of documentary, a trailer, and music video by Randy Newman.  Pretty sparse for a Disney blu-ray set, as Disney has always been at the forefront for developing new features for blu-ray for their releases.  It looks like they took a pass on this release.  Let’s hope this isn’t a trend for future Disney releases.

“James and The Giant Peach” is a real treat for lovers of stop action animation and for Roald Dahl stories. Technically excellent, the two disc set includes the blu-ray and dvd versions of the film plus some rather slim extras by Disney standards.
