Memphis Now Available On Blu-ray and DVD
Broadway musical fans take note! The Tony award-winning musical “Memphis” has been released on Blu-ray and DVD from Shout! Factory. The acclaimed musical, which is set in the 1950’s and revolves around romance, race and rock and roll, has been recorded live and in hi-def which is about the best experience one can have without seeing the show on Broadway. The Blu-ray and DVD also includes a bonus feature titled “Behind The Scenes: How Memphis Was Captured.”

The Best And Worst Films And Shows Of 2011
For the past few years, television had undoubtedly surpassed film in terms of quality art and entertainment. In 2011, however, the opposite occurred. TV took a serious slide this year while cinema flourished. Continue reading

Terra Nova Premieres Tonight
The long delayed, big budget Steven Spielberg produced TV series “Terra Nova” finally premieres tonight (Monday September 26th, 2011). The time travel/dinosaur centric series kicks off with a 2 hour pilot at 8/7c.
While I will certainly be tuning in, I have to wonder if this series can garner enough viewers to survive or if it will be another ambitious short-lived sci-fi series. One thing’s for sure, if the series does fail, it won’t be for lack of promotion. Fox has been bombarding the tube with ads on multiple channels (even Fox Soccer Channel).
The Lion King 3D and Blu-ray News
As you may know, “The Lion King” 3D has just hit theaters today, but that’s not the only “The Lion King” news. On October 4th, there will be 3 home video releases. First up is a two-disc Diamond Edition Blu-ray set which also includes a DVD copy. Secondly, there is a four-disc Diamond Edition which contains a Blu-ray 3D copy, a Blu-ray copy, a DVD copy, and a digital copy. Lastly, there is the eight-disc “The Lion King” trilogy which contains Blu-ray and DVD copies of “The Lion King,” “The Lion King 1 1/2,” and “The Lion King 2” films. Also included are a Blu-ray 3D and a digital copy of the first film. On November 15, the film will be released on a stand-alone DVD copy.
Ringer Premieres Tonight On CW
After a 7 year stint on the brilliant “Buffy The Vampire Slayer,” Sarah Michelle Gellar makes her long awaited return to television with the twin sisters mystery thriller “Ringer” on CW Tuesday Sept. 13th at 8/9c. Will the show be a bomb? Will it be fall’s hottest new show? Will it have a cult following ala ‘Buffy’? Who knows, but I for one am curious to find out.
Cliff Robertson R.I.P.
Academy Award winning actor Cliff Robertson passed away today (9/10/11) at the age of 88. Robertson was best known for his work in the “Spider-Man” films as Uncle Ben, the “Twilight Zone” episode “A Hundred Yards Over The Rim,” “Star 80,” “Escape From L.A.,” and, of course, “Charly” which he won “Best Actor” for. He will be missed.

The Rocketeer Blu-ray and X-Men: First Class Blu-ray News
According to Amazon, THE best comic book film (in my humble opinion) is finally slated to hit Blu-ray on December 13th. I am, of course, referring to the 1991 gem “The Rocketeer.” No specs have been released yet, but hopefully there will be some extra features. As you may recall, the DVD release had nothing more than a trailer.
On the subject of comic book films, I thought I should remind folks that “X-Men: First Class” is out on Blu-ray and DVD this Friday, September 9th. In my eyes, this is far and away the best film of 2011 thus far. If you haven’t seen it, run out and buy it Friday.
Eddie Murphy To Host 2012 Oscars
It’s official. Eddie Murphy has been hired on to host the Feb. 26, 2012 Academy Awards Ceremony. After the fiasco that was the 2011 show, this seems like a smart move. Rather than experimenting with hosts ala James Franco and Anne Hathaway, it makes sense to get a comedic legend like Eddie Murphy to host the 84th Oscars.
