Fresh Horses Blu-ray Review

“Fresh Horses” is an inert romantic drama.
Based on the play by Larry Ketron (who also wrote the screenplay), “Fresh Horses” is a 1988 romantic drama. The Ohio set story revolves around a college student (Matt) who is engaged to be married to a rich girl (Alice). When Matt and his buddy Tipton venture off to a party at a countryside house, Matt meets a young woman named Jewel. Matt falls head over heels in love with Jewel even though they come from very different worlds. Matters become even more complicated for Matt when he discovers that Jewel is hiding secrets.
Even though “Fresh Horses” stars Brat Packers Molly Ringwald and Andrew McCarthy, there’s a reason this film has vanished into obscurity. Director David Anspaugh’s romantic drama is a meandering sappy soap opera that is completely lacking in passion. While the script tries to be a poignant story about desire and immaturity, it fumbles its messages all the way through to its clumsy unsatisfying ending. You’re left wanting more growth from the characters or at least a deeper examination of who Jewel is and why Matt is at a crossroads in his life and seemingly wants something other than what he has. Everything feels too telegraphed here for it to fully connect or work as a dramatic romance.
As for the aforementioned Molly Ringwald and Andrew McCarthy, they have shared the screen in the past to better results. Again, the script lets them down and you never quite believe the yearning between these two. Elsewhere in the cast, keep your eyes peeled for Ben Stiller (as Matt’s pal Tipton) and Viggo Mortensen (a role I won’t disclose to avoid spoilers).
