The Quick Draw McGraw Show- The Complete Series Blu-ray Review

Warner Archives continues the Hanna-Barbera Blu-ray releases with “The Quick Draw McGraw Show.”

Much like “The Huckleberry Hound Show” that preceded it, 1959’s “The Quick Draw McGraw Show” is a Hanna-Barbera animated series that features 3 cartoons per episode. The cartoons are “Snooper and Blabber,” “Augie Doggie Aad Doggie Daddy,” and “Quick Draw McGraw.” The series ran for 3 seasons with a total of 45 episodes.

“Quick Draw McGraw” is obviously the centerpiece of the series and tends to be the best of the three. The comedic western cartoon revolves around the titular Sheriff horse and his sidekick Deputy Baba Looey (a burro). Much of the stories involve the two tracking down outlaws and bandits, but there are plots about court appearances, disguises, their trusted ally Snuffles (a bloodhound), rustlers, and, of course, Quick Draw’s Zorro esque alter ego El Kabong. The real breakout from this show isn’t the two main characters though as Snagglepuss is far and away the best aspect of this entire series. The fan favorite character even appears in episodes of “Snooper and Blabber” and “Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy” as well (albeit in an earlier prototype fashion).

“Snooper and Blabber” is the most generic cartoon here. The story revolves around the two Private Detectives Snooper (a cat) and Blabber (a mouse). Their jobs usually involve protection duties, chasing criminals, retrieving stolen goods, missing persons/animals, run-ins with the law, but there are other plots involving fairy tale twists, Evil Scientist (an ongoing character), and even an appearance by an early in the works incarnation of Hardy Har Har.

“Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy” is a charming father and son dog cartoon. The stories are a bit all over the place as they involve money woes, a flying saucer, a horse, Augie watching the house, the circus, ants, birthdays, house invaders/unwanted guests, a camping trip, cat, potions, a robot servant, an alien, treasure hunting, Augie’s friends, etc. It’s mostly an assortment of adventures of a father (who sounds a lot like Jimmy Durante) trying to teach his son about the way of the world.

If you’re a Hanna-Barbera devotee or have an affinity for classic cartoons, “The Quick Draw McGraw Show” will be up your alley. It may not be on the level of say “The Yogi Bear Show,” but there’s a lot of escapist joy to be found within these episodes.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.33:1 1080p. How does it look? The remastered episodes certainly cleaned up to be sure. The colors are particularly sharp. Yes, there are noticeable print defects, but that is to be expected.

Audio Track: 2.0 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? Fans can expect clean audio tracks for each and every episode.

Extras include “The Good, The Bad And The El Kabong” (a 6 minute featurette on the history of “The Quick Draw McGraw Show”) and “Archival Rarities” (21 minutes of bumpers and ads for “The Quick Draw McGraw Show”).
