Elijah Peel DVD Review

Same old faith based drama.

Based on the life of Kevin D. Sepe, “Elijah Peel” is a faith based drama written by Kevin D. Sepe (he also co-directed the film alongside Nathan Ross Murphy). The story follows the titular rock star who lives a rock star life full of drugs, booze, and women. After he suffers a heart attack, he winds up in the hospital where he meets a precocious dying young child (Jessica). Jessica gives Elijah a new outlook on life and causes him to have a spiritual awakening. Elijah decides to reinvent himself and his music and veer his life into a new and more positive direction.

When Kevin Sorbo shows up in your movie as a rock music manager named Rock Diamond, you know you’re in for a rough time. “Elijah Peel” may have its heart in the right place as it explores themes of redemption and friendship, but this faith based drama feels like a collection of tired old cliches. From start to finish, Kevin D. Sepe’s story is anchored to the faith based formula that movies of this genre seem incapable of escaping. This is the type of movie that literally states its own themes in the dialogue! It’s a preachy melodrama on auto-pilot as it’s so devoid of anything that would be considered fresh.

The only thing “Elijah Peel” has going for it is a couple of respectable performances from the two leads with Robert Malcolm Cumming as Elijah and Evelyn Grace Kite as Jessica. The chemistry between the two is believable and truly is the only aspect that makes this movie watchable.
