Scary Movie (2000) 4K UHD SteelBook Review

The original “Scary Movie” is the second best in the franchise.
Written by Shawn and Marlon Wayans, Buddy Johnson, Phil Beauman, and Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer (the duo who went on to make the atrocious parody films like “Meet The Spartans”), 2000’s parody film “Scary Movie” led to the 00’s era parody movie craze. This along with the superior sequel “Scary Movie 2” and “Not Another Teen Movie” were the best of that era. Anyway, as you can probably guess, the comedy is largely a spoof of “Scream” and “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” but also contains references to “The Sixth Sense,” the Wazzup ads, “The Matrix,” “The Usual Suspects,” and more. The story finds high schoolers Cindy and Brenda, Buffy, Greg, Bobby and Ray being preyed upon by Ghostface who knows they accidentally killed a man a year ago. Other characters play into the story here like Gail (a reporter), Officer Doofy, and Shorty. In typical “Scream” fashion there may be more than one killer…
While “Scary Movie” uses the blueprint of “Scream” to frame the story, it essentially loses the plot and often seems more concerned with cramming in references. This is an issue that has plagued the franchise as a whole (especially in the atrocity that is 2026’s “Scary Movie”). Luckily, the original Keenen Ivory Wayans directed “Scary Movie” still holds up fairly well although it all feels very “been there done that” watching the film 26 years later. There are plenty of sight gags that amuse here like the movie theater sequence and the over-the-top sex scene. The writers are also unafraid to offend here (even though some jokes have aged like milk). Not everything works of course as no comedy is perfect, but as a parody film it is one of the better ones to be sure.
The cast features plenty of talent like Anna Faris, Shannon Elizabeth, Shawn and Marlon Wayans, Dave Sheridan, Cheri Oteri, and Carmen Electra in the opening sequence. Shawn Wayans and Dave Sheridan have the goofy scene stealing characters, but it’s Anna Faris who impresses the most. It’s no surprise that her career took off after this as she’s cute, fearless, and hilarious as Cindy.
Video/Audio:
Presentation: 2.39:1 2160p. How does it look? While an improvement over the Blu-ray release, the print is not quite up to 4K standards. Looks more like an upscaled Blu-ray than anything.
Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? A higher quality audio track would have been preferred, but the 5.1 track is still respectable.
Extras:
* Blu-ray copy
* Digital copy
* Theatrical trailer
* 6 additional scenes
* Vintage behind the scenes featurette
* “Movie Showcase”- Jump to 3 sequences from the film
