Evil Dead Burn 4K UHD Review

“Evil Dead Burn” is a brutal new entry in the horror franchise. 

Written by Sébastien Vaniček and Florent Bernard, “Evil Dead Burn” is the sixth installment in the long-running horror series. While it does feature ties to the likes of “Evil Dead 2” and “Evil Dead Rise,” this is an original story. The Deadites return and are seeking the Kandarian Dagger (a weapon which can send Deadites to hell). The Deadites are led to the Price family. They start off by killing Will (the abusive husband to a French woman named Alice) and turning him into a Deadite. In typical Deadite fashion, they start to turn members of the Price family one by one. Now, Alice (who has already endured trauma from being with Will) finds herself going through hell by facing her demons, dealing with the already toxic Price family turned Deadites, and trying to stay alive.

Best known for helming the spider film “Infested,” rising horror filmmaker Sébastien Vaniček gets a chance to put his own spin on the Evil Dead universe with “Evil Dead Burn.” For those accustomed to the more horror-comedy centric entries like “Evil Dead 2” and “Army of Darkness,” you don’t get that here. This is a very brutal, very French, and very dark story dealing with heavy themes of trauma and toxic families. It’s an intentionally uncomfortable horror film, but it still manages to feel like an Evil Dead film thanks to references to past films and the nods to Sam Raimi’s work. Would it be preferable to see more dark humor ala “Evil Dead Rise”? Sure, but it’s also refreshing to see directors telling their own unique stories within this universe. It keeps it fresh instead of simply redoing what has already been done.

Cast wise, there’s no big names here and that’s perfectly fine. Horror has always been the best place for unknowns and character actors to break out. Souhelia Yacoub (Alice) is bound to be one of those breakout stars as she really goes through the ringer for this role. Erroll Shand is intensely unsettling as Will’s father Edgar, Luciana Buchanan impresses as Thya as does George Pullar as the loathsome Will. Really, the entire cast delivers intense and dedicated performances.
