Scary Movie (2026) 4K UHD Review
“Scary Movie” is scary bad.
Written by Marlon, Shawn, Craig, and Keenen Ivory Wayans and Rick Alvarez, “Scary Movie (2026)” is the sixth installment in the long-running parody franchise. In this outing, the 4 original characters (Cindy, Brenda, Shorty and Ray) make their return. The story finds Ghostface returning in a very meta style as the killer/killers are now going after characters from the original “Scary Movie” and new characters such as Cindy’s daughter Tuesday, Sara and her boyfriend Jack, Brenda’s kids Brad and Dei, Brad’s girlfriend Elle, and Jess (the son of Sheriff Greg).
The return of the Wayans Brothers to the Scary Movie franchise after 25 years should have been cause for celebration. After all, the first two installments (especially the underrated and hilarious “Scary Movie 2”) were easily the best in the series. Unfortunately, the Wayans Brothers seem to have lost their way.
From the opening 10 minutes you can tell director Michael Tiddes’ “Scary Movie (2026)” was doomed and it only gets worse with each passing minute. Instead of taking a new approach to the parody film or indeed doing anything remotely creative with the story, the writing staff merely string jokes, cameos, and references together in haphazard ways. Not only do they take on recent horror titles like the Scream sequels, 2018’s “Halloween,” “Longlegs,” “The Substance,” “Terrifier,” “Get Out,” “Sinners,” and so on, but they throw in random material about COVID, transgender people, “Michael,” etc. It would be one thing if they pushed the boundaries and had something meaningful to say, but they don’t. Aside from a few chuckles, every joke here lands with a rippling thud. The Wayans seem out of touch, bitter, and stuck in the past. Their comedy hasn’t evolved or matured . Granted, you don’t go into a Scary Movie film expecting high art, but you should at the very least expect to laugh instead of shaking your head in misery.
As painfully unfunny as the material is, it is nice to see some familiar faces return here such as Anna Faris (Cindy), Regina Hall (Brenda), Marlon (Shorty) and Shawn (Ray) Wayans, Dave Sheridan (Doofy) and especially Chris Elliott (Shorthand). You can tell they are at least having a good time reuniting for this project. At least someone was having fun.
