Tulsa King Season 3 Blu-ray Review
“Tulsa King” continues to be creator Taylor Sheridan’s most entertaining series.
In the 10 episode third season of “Tulsa King,” Tulsa crime boss Dwight Manfredi and his crew (Tyson, Mitch, Bodhi, Grace, Bigfoot, Goodie, and Dwight’s sister Joanne) have their hands full. Dwight has been contracted by FBI Agent Musso to work with him or else he’ll crack down on Dwight’s entire criminal operation and everyone in it. Mussi assigns Dwight to capture a terrorist/bomb maker known as Dexter. Dexter is only a single problem Dwight encounters this season though as the cutthroat mafia man Jeremiah Dunmire proves to be his biggest adversary. Jeremiah and his son Cole seek to take over a bourbon business by any means necessary, but Dwight looks to take it over from under him. As if that wasn’t enough, NY mob boss Ray is looking for a cut of Dwight’s business and isn’t happy with how Dwight is handling things. Elsewhere in the season are stories involving Kansas City crime boss Bill Bevilaqua disappearing, Dwight and ranch owner Margaret’s relationship, Thresher running for Governor, Mitch rekindling a relationship with Cleo (whose father was killed by Jeremiah), Joanne being kidnapped, and a hitman (Russell) ally of Dwight popping up in town.
As ridiculous as “Tulsa King” is (and believe me it’s ridiculous), there’s something engrossing about this series. It is by no means high art nor is it on the level of some of Taylor Sheridan’s best work like “1883.” With that said though, it’s arguably his most consistent and fun series. It’s basically the equivalent of a gangster soap opera complete with a big ensemble cast of characters and plenty of cliffhangers. You find yourself eager to see what will happen with Dwight’s growing business and you become invested in this oddball crime family’s dynamics. How can you not enjoy yourself watching Martin Starr act opposite Sylvester Stallone? It’s so weird and delightful.
Speaking of the cast, everyone seems to be having a blast here. Sylvester Stallone (who also co-wrote several episodes this season) is becoming more and more comfortable playing Dwight. He’s suave, has heart, but you never want to cross him. Martin Starr continues to steal the show as Bodhi. Garrett Hedlund, Dana Delany, Annabella Sciorra, and McKenna Quigley Harrington continue to thrive here. Robert Patrick is the new baddie this season as Jeremiah and he’s as reliable as always. The biggest and best surprise is seeing Samuel L. Jackson as Russell who will soon have his own spin-off series “Frisco King.” If it’s anything like “Tulsa King,” it should be a homerun.
