The third volume is an important one as it includes a lot of historically significant cartoons. There’s the first ever “Looney Tunes” cartoon “Sinkin’ In The Bathtub” with Bosko, the first ever “Merrie Melodies” “Lady, Play Your Mandolin” with Foxy, and the last ever B&W short “Puss n’ Booty.” In fact, there’s a lot of 30s and 40s toons here with a smattering of 50s and 60s shorts as well. Character wise, this set is heavy with Tweety-Bird and Sylvester, Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny tales, but a lot of familiar faces pop up here like Foghorn Leghorn, Porky Pig, Pepe le Pew, and so forth. The main characters aren’t the only ones to get the focus here as everything from mice and mosquitos to possums and elves have a short. In terms of stories, there’s the traditional chase cartoons with Elmer chasing Daffy, Sylvester chasing Tweety, and Bugs being hunted. Aside from that, there are musical shorts, WWII toons, a Cupid and Devil tale, and spoofs of “The Honeymooners,” “A Star Is Born,” Goldilocks,” and “Mutiny On The Bounty.”

With the superb “Coyote Vs. Acme” now in theaters (seriously, go see it), “Looney Tunes” is back in the spotlight which is perfect publicity for the forthcoming Blu-ray release Looney Tunes Collector’s Vault: Volume 3. While the uncut cartoons are very much of their time period, this collection is chock full of beloved characters and a whole lot of laughs. Among my personal favorites here are “Tweet And Sour” (in which Sylvester has to protect Tweety from the one-eyed Sam Cat) and the movie reference filled “Hollywood Daffy” which sees Daffy promptly trying to get into WB studios in Hollywood. Of course, “Looney Tunes” and “Merrie Melodies” are more than just the iconic characters and you get to see lesser known characters like Conrad Cat in “Conrad The Sailor.” There’s a real variety here which makes this a notable collection to be sure.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.37:1 1080p. How does it look? The 50 cartoons have been remastered on Blu-ray for the first time and the results are stunning. There are defects to be sure, but the color cartoons look vibrant while the B&W shorts look noticeably cleaner. 

Audio Track: 2.0 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? From the sound effects to the songs, the 2.0 track is sharp.

Extras include 5 commentary tracks on the episodes “Care Of The Missing Hare” (Greg Ford), “Fresh Airedale” (Greg Ford), “Herr Meets Hare” (Greg Ford), “Mississippi Hare” (Eric Goldberg) and “My Favorite Duck” (Jerry Beck).
