Disclosure Day 4K UHD Review
“Disclosure Day” is a thought provoking thrill ride.
Penned by David Koepp, “Disclosure Day” sees director Steven Spielberg returning to the subject of aliens. At the start of the story Earth is on the brink of nuclear war, but that’s not the focus here. Instead, attention turns to a cybersecurity specialist (Daniel) and a meteorologist (Margaret) that are living in different towns. Daniel has stolen a drive filled with data about alien life alongside alien tech from the nefarious Wardex Corp. who are experimenting on aliens and using their technology. Daniel is fleeing the pursuing Wardex (led by CEO Noah) with his girlfriend Jane. Margaret, meanwhile, displays psychic abilities and is speaking in an alien language (which Daniel can understand). Wardex is also keen on capturing Margaret after learning about her abilities. Through this ordeal, Margaret and Daniel discover hidden life changing secrets about themselves that are connected to extraterrestrials. With the help of a team comprised of former Wardex employees, the goal is to expose the company and reveal the truth about aliens to the world.
After viewing “Disclosure Day,” it felt like it was one of Spielberg’s best films of the past 26 years in my eyes, but others do not share my sentiments. Since its release, the sci-fi feature has been wildly divisive with some viewers being put off by the abrupt cliffhanger ending. To me, it seemed like Steven Spielberg wasn’t playing it safe here which is refreshing. Both he and Koepp have crafted an original, urgent, thoughtful, and intense film about truth, cover-ups, and communication that feels so timely in this age of classified information and the world’s inability to properly communicate. On top of that, the movie really hits the ground running and never lets up. It’s a chase movie and a race against time movie as the fate of the world hinges on the contents of the stolen drive.
The cast is stacked here with the likes of Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Colman Domingo, Eve Hewson, and Wyatt Russell. Colin Firth plays a memorable villain here, but it’s rising star Josh O’Connor and veteran Emily Blunt that steal the show. They’re locked into their roles and are on board with Spielberg’s vision.
