Father Mother Sister Brother Blu-ray Review

“Father Mother Sister Brother” is vintage Jim Jarmusch film.

Written and directed by indie legend Jim Jarmusch, “Father Mother Sister Brother” is an anthology film not unlike Jarmusch’s own “Night On Earth.” As the title suggests, the 2025 film features 3 stories about a father, a mother, and a sister and a brother. The “Father” story finds siblings Jeff and Emily visiting their father in a remote town. The two are concerned about their father’s wellbeing and financial state after the passing of his wife/their mother, but the father seems to be hiding things from his children. The Dublin set “Mother” story takes place on the day the mother (a famed author) received a visit from her two daughters (Timothea and Lilith) for tea. The two daughters seem to be keeping up appearances despite them both hiding secrets about their lives. The final story “Sister Brother” is an emotional piece set in France in which siblings Skye and Billy grapple with the loss of their parents. 

Jim Jarmusch is the definition of an auteur. He tells his own unique brand of leisurely paced stories that often feature deadpan humor. His films are an acquired taste, but if you treasure his work, you’ll be a fan for life (like myself). “Father Mother Sister Brother” is another jewel in his filmography and was easily one of the best films of 2025. The stories may seem uneventful and simple on the surface, but in typical Jarmusch fashion, there’s so much going on under the surface and in the unspoken moments. The film is a thought provoking trio of tales about family, secrets, and memories in 3 different parts of the world. He shows you how some things seem to be universal and how some things are different. The concepts of togetherness, facades, families drifting apart, and awkward family dynamics are explored in great depth here in a way that only Jarmusch can. 

The cast is loaded with talent that includes Jarmusch film regulars Tom Waits and Adam Driver along with the likes of Cate Blanchett, Mayim Bialik, Charlotte Rampling, Vicky Krieps, Indya Moore and Luka Sabbat. Everyone takes full advantage of their characters, but the quirky and secretive Tom Waits steals the show as the mysterious father along with Sabbat and Moore who give truly heartfelt performances.
