Star Wars: Legacy Book Review

“Star Wars: Legacy” is a frustrating read.  

Written by Madeline Roux, “Star Wars: Legacy” is a Rey and Leia centric novel set after “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.” There are multiple intersecting story arcs taking place here. The first involves Rey trying to fix Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber. The texts she acquired reveal a lightsaber forge on the planet Tython so she, Leia, Chewbacca, C-3PO, and R2-D2 head there to seek answers. While en route, they encounter two scavengers (Gavrin and Ziff) who are evading the First order after attempting to take out a First Order Major (Brilla Wolstenholme) alongside fellow co-conspirators Gordi and Gav’s sister Vanika (whose whereabouts are initially unknown). The 4 rebellious individuals were seeking revenge on the Major after their planet Hays Minor was essentially destroyed. Major Brilla, meanwhile, is relentlessly searching for the would-be assassins, but discovers the First Order was potentially involved in the plot which could endanger her own life. 

“Star Wars: Legacy” is the definition of uneven. The book is at its best when it’s exploring the character of Rey. For those wondering what Rey’s mindset is in between ‘The Last Jedi’ and “The Rise of Skywalker,’ you certainly get some answers here. Rey is in a dark place here. She’s lonely, she can’t quiet her mind, she’s distraught about past events, and she’s struggling with the darkness (we know why obviously). She’s also trying to further understand The Force and her own abilities. Madeline Roux does a commendable job with Rey’s characterization while also bridging the gap between the 2 films to show her growth.

Leia doesn’t quite have as much to do here as Rey, but there’s several moments that will have fans buzzing. I will say Leia’s complex dynamic with Rey is addressed here, but it’s Leia’s visions mixed with her Force Ghost meeting (no spoilers) that prove to be the most intriguing moments. 

In terms of the other characters like Brilla, Gav and Ziff, they never really grabbed me and take up too much story time. If anything they felt like distractions from the best parts of the story with Rey. Brilla in particular slows the book to a crawl as her arc drags on to an anti-climactic ending. To be fair, the entire ending is anti-climactic, but her part especially. It feels like Roux spends too much time building things up without delivering a satisfactory pay-off.

Going back to Tython, the planet is the major location featured in this story. Without delving into too many details, readers can expect to see Jedi secrets located here that tie into Rey’s quest. The storyline is a bit too drug out for my liking as Rey and company spend a lot of time wandering about, but there’s some enticing scenes to be sure.

A lot of fans may be wondering who else appears in this tale. You can expect to see a few familiar faces like Rose, Finn, Poe, and Kylo Ren, but their scenes are minimal at best.
