Ranking The Evil Dead Franchise

With “Evil Dead Burn” now in theaters, it’s time to rank the Evil Dead franchise. I say franchise because I am including “Ash Vs. Evil Dead” here.

1. Evil Dead 2- Despite being a sort of a remake/sequel with a bigger budget, the second installment fires on all cylinders as it leans more into dark humor. It’s about as perfect of a horror-comedy that exists.

2. Evil Dead- One of the most influential indie horror films of all time. Sam Raimi became a bonafide auteur with the stylish, gory, inventive, and deranged debut entry.

3. Army Of Darkness- Much more cartoony in tone, but it works thanks to Bruce Campbell being in peak form here. The  change of scenery (medieval times) greatly benefits this one as well.

4. Ash vs. Evil Dead- In a perfect world this series would have kept going on beyond 3 seasons, but alas that didn’t happen. It ended on a huge cliffhanger just as the show was starting to hit stride. Luckily, what we did get was a largely satisfying return to the universe. It was a joy to see Bruce Campbell back in action as Ash and Ray Santiago (Pablo) and Dana DeLorenzo (Kelly) proved to be great new additions to the franchise as well.

5. Evil Dead Rise- I was skeptical about an Ash-less movie, but director Lee Cronin truly proved the franchise could go beyond the world of that character.

6. Evil Dead Burn- For those looking for more of a horror-comedy outing, this isn’t it. This one goes back to the roots of the original. It’s a dark and brutally violent story about trauma, toxic families, and abuse (with Deadites). It may not have the rewatchability factor of the Raimi films, but it’s a worthy chapter in the saga.

7. Evil Dead (2013)- I know this incarnation has its fans, but I absolutely loathe this one. It’s essentially a blood-soaked remake without anything that made the original so special.
