Eraser 4K UHD Review

“Eraser” is a bland Arnold action flick.

Scripted by Tony Puryear and Walon Green, 1996’s “Eraser” is an action film that feels like an 80s leftover. The story revolves around a U.S. Marshal (John Kruger) who erases people’s identities and places them in witness protection with a new identity. His latest target is a Cyrez Corp. employee turned FBI informant (Lee) who has uncovered evidence that Cyrez Corp. is looking to illegally sell prototype guns. Lee initially refuses witness protection, but when her life becomes endangered and John saves her life, she has a change of heart. The situation becomes even more complicated when John is betrayed by a traitor in his own agency.

“Eraser” is one of the 90s Arnold Schwarzenegger blockbuster films that is not often mentioned in his filmography. Having not seen it since its theatrical release, there wasn’t much I could recall about the film aside from the “You’ve just been erased” line, the alligator scene and the plane/skydiving sequence. After revisiting the film, well, those are still the only elements worth remembering.

If you’re an action movie enthusiast or an Arnold movie collector, director Charles Russell’s “Eraser” might appeal to you. It has the standard one-liners, explosions, high body count, giant guns, and shootouts. If you’re looking for something more out of your action movies, you won’t find that here. The mixture of the uninspired and paper thin plotline and Arnold’s robotic performance makes the film a bit of a chore to watch. Sure, the aforementioned gator and plane sequences are thrilling (they should be given the $100 million budget), but there’s nothing here that strikes a chord compared to Arnold’s best works like “Predator” or “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.” It’s a “what you see is what you get” type of movie.

Aside from Arnold, the cast is surprisingly stacked here with James Caan, James Coburn, Vanessa Williams, James Cromwell, and Robert Pastorelli. Granted, Coburn and Cromwell have very little to do here, but Caan seems to enjoy being the bad guy, Vanessa Williams turns in credible work, and the late Robert Pastorelli livens things up.

Video/Audio:
