Top 5 Football/Soccer Films

The World Cup starts today and as such the sport of football (or soccer as it is known in some circles) is about to take over the globe. In honor of the grand sporting event, today’s list will be dedicated to the 5 best football/soccer films in my humble opinion. There aren’t a lot of great ones out there yet, but these 5 are top of the table.

1. The Damned United- Tom Hooper’s engrossing true story based tale of Leeds United manager Brian Clough features a truly sensational performance by Michael Sheen.

2. Gregory’s Girl- Bill Forsyth’s part football story, part coming-of-age teen comedy, and part romance is a real winner.

3. Next Goal Wins- No, not the Taiki Waiti scripted version. I’m talking about the superb 2014 documentary about the underdog American Samoa team.

4. Fever Pitch- Forget about the baseball centric American remake starring Jimmy Fallon. The 1997 original about an Arsenal super fan (played by Colin Firth) is where it’s at.

5. Goal! The Dream Begins- Is it full of cliches? Sure, but this fictional story about the rise of a football player (Santiago Muñez) is a feel good story. Note: There are two other installments in this series as well.
