You Light Up My Life Blu-ray Review

Didi Conn shines in the lackluster “You Light Up My Life.”
Written, directed, and composed by Joseph Brooks, “You Light Up My Life” is a drama about a young woman named Laurie. Since she was a child, her father coaxed her into doing a comedy act with a dummy. Now, as an adult, she is still doing the act and is also hustling around L.A. for acting gigs. Her real passion in life though is singing and songwriting. Laurie is about to be wedded to a man named Ken, but ends up having a one night fling with a guy named Chris she met at a bar. She bumps into Chris again who turns out to be a director that could potentially advance her career. Laurie also feels as if she is falling for Chris and is second guessing her wedding. With all of this going on, Laurie has to decide what she really wants in life.
“You Light Up My Life” feels like a movie that puts the title song center stage and it’s not hard to see why given that it won an Academy Award and was a major hit. The film’s story feels undercooked. It’s designed to be a “A Star Is Born” esque story about a young woman that decides to live her own life her way, but it feels like it’s in need of more development. The speeches aren’t subtle, the romantic elements are downright awkward, and the big dramatic moments feel like they need a rewrite.
The film is salvaged by a charming and vulnerable performance by Didi Conn (best known for playing Frenchy in “Grease” and “Grease 2”). Her lip syncs may be obvious, but she truly carries the story on her back. Joe Silver also turns in a quality performance as her father Si.
Video/Audio:
Presentation: 1.78:1 1080p. How does it look? Some scenes appear very grainy while others look pristine. Probably the best results that you could get with the film elements I would imagine.
Audio Track: 2.0 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? This is a perfectly adequate 2.0 track.
The lone extra is a VHS inspired slipcover.
