Protector Blu-ray Review

“Protector” is a lazy action flick.

Penned by Bong Seob-Mun, “Protector” is an action thriller about a former special forces soldier (Nikki) who takes matters into her own hands when her daughter Chloe is kidnapped by human traffickers known as the Syndicate. Nikki is hellbent on finding her daughter and will slaughter any criminal who gets in her way. While Nikki is taking the law into her own hands, police investigate Nikki’s murders while an Army Colonel that worked with Nikki is trying to bring her in.

If “Protector” sounds familiar that’s because it plays like a cross between “Taken” and “First Blood” (not to mention countless other films). In fact, there’s not much that is original about director Adrian Grϋnberg’s generic action thriller. It’s visually drab, repetitive, has an obnoxious one-note score, contains obvious voice over narration, and feels like it’s on auto-pilot until the preposterous twist ending which feels both cruel and insulting (no spoilers here for those who wish to see this, but you’ll see what I mean). It’s one of those cheaply made action films that is designed for a global crowd that tries to coast on action alone. From that perspective, you definitely get plenty of carnage as Nikki is a one woman wrecking machine who takes down scumbag criminals. That’s really all the movie has going for it.

Speaking of Nikki, Milla Jovovich shows she still has it as an action hero. She’s been doing this for decades now and hasn’t lost a step. It’s just a shame she is frequently in poor action vehicles like this. Elsewhere in the cast you’ve got D.B. Sweeney and Matthew Modine who go through the motions. Who can blame them?
