Ranking The Star Wars Films

I’ve always pushed back against ranking the Star Wars films as they are near and dear to me personally (minus the sequel trilogy). In honor of “The Mandalorian And Grogu,” I decided now is the time to give it a whirl. Note: I am only ranking the theatrical films.
1. Star Wars: Episode 4- A New Hope- Many folks out there would pick ‘Empire’ as the best, but ANH is still the most magical to me. It does all the heavy lifting in the world building and introduces the characters in such a perfect fashion.
2. Star Wars: Episode 5- The Empire Strikes Back- About as perfect as a movie can get (with one of the all-time best endings to boot).
3. Star Wars: Episode 3- Revenge Of The Sith- Prophetic, tragic, operatic (literally), epic. Ep. 3 is all of these things and more.
4. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story- Far and away the best film of the Disney era. It showed that not only could Star Wars be more adult, but that it was capable of dipping into other genres.
5. Star Wars: Episode 6- Return Of The Jedi- As a child, this movie certainly has more impact. As an adult, it’s easy to nitpick. With that said, the last half-hour is as good as it gets.
6. Star Wars: Episode 1- The Phantom Menace- I don’t care what anyone says about this film. It is the single greatest theatrical experience of my life and I doubt that will ever change.
7. Star Wars: Episode 2- Attack Of The Clones- The romantic aspect is underwhelming, but the film has aged fairly well with its political plots, the iconic Yoda v Dooku lightsaber battle, Jango fett, I could keep going.
8. Solo: A Star Wars Story- Even though it is ranked lower, it is easily the most underrated Star Wars film. It’s a crime we never got sequels.
9. The Mandalorian And Grogu- It’s exactly what it needs to be- a big screen version of “The Mandalorian.” It’s a bit slight and lacking in surprises, but it’s packed with heart, monsters, Hutts, and action.
10.Star Wars: The Clone Wars- It’s inferior to the animated series, but I’ve always had a soft spot for this film as it introduced Ahsoka and contained some really weird stuff (see Ziro the Hutt).
11. Star Wars: Episode 7- The Force Awakens- The birth of a new era that brings nothing new to the table. Still the best of the sequel trilogy though.
12. Star Wars: Episode 8- The Last Jedi- Subversion at its worst.
13. Star Wars: Episode 9- The Rise Of Skywalker- Proof that the sequel trilogy doesn’t work because it lacks cohesion, represents a clash of visions, and was never properly planned out at all.
