10 Recommended Documentaries About Movies

Initially, I thought about making a list of 10 recommended documentaries of any genre, but as I started breaking it down, I thought I’d make a more specific type of documentary list. This list is entirely devoted to documentaries about movies. Although I could have listed more titles to be sure, the 10 films mentioned below are my personal favorites.
1. American Movie- A funny and down to earth portrait of the life of an indie filmmaker trying to finish a movie. Simply one of the best documentaries ever made.
2. Lost In La Mancha- Although Terry Gilliam was finally able to make “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote” years later, this heartbreaking film about the failed quest to make a dream project come to life sticks with you.
3. Burden Of Dreams- This Les Blank documentary about the wild making of “Fitzcarraldo” is better than the movie itself.
4. Jodorowsky’s Dune- We may have the ideal version of “Dune” now with Denis Villeneuve’s, but this documentary about the bonkers unmade Alejandro Jodorowsky “Dune” is nothing short of fascinating.
5. Best Worst Movie- A deeply entertaining look at one of the best worst movies (“Troll 2”).
6. Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy- An exhaustive and insightful deep dive into the Nightmare On Elm Street franchise.
7. This Film Is Not Yet Rated- If you have ever wondered about the MPAA ratings system, this movie sheds light on that.
8. Heart Of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse- Francis Ford Coppola’s journey in making “Apocalypse Now” is the perfect companion piece to one of cinema’s best war films.
9. Rewind This!- A nostalgic look back at the VHS era that holds a special place in the hearts of many film fans (myself included)
10. Easy Riders, Raging Bulls: How The Sex, Drugs, And Rock ‘N’ Roll Generation Saved Hollywood- Based on the book of the same name, this documentary is all about the 70’s cinema and filmmakers that changed the industry.
