Amazing Grace: Country Stars Sing Songs Of Faith And Hope DVD Review

“Amazing Grace: Country Stars Sing Songs Of Faith And Hope” is for the country and gospel music lovers out there.

In this 10 DVD set from Time Life, viewers are treated to gospel song performances from various concerts and specials by a wide range of country music artists from the past and present. The first 8 discs contain songs by the likes of George Jones, Randy Travis, Alan Jackson, Alabama, Reba McEntire, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, The Oak Ridge Boys, Del McCoury, Jimmy Fortune, The Statler Brothers, and Vince Gill. The final 2 discs performances are from the Grand Ole Opry and features Flatt And Scruggs, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Martina McBride, Buck Owens, Johnny Cash and the Carter Family, Charley Pride and more.

Country and Gospel music aren’t exactly genres that are near and dear to my heart so I’m not exactly the target audience for this box set. That’s not to say that I don’t like country music, however, as I enjoy the vocal stylings of older country artists like Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn along with bluegrass acts like Billy Strings and Flatt and Scruggs. Thankfully, a lot of the greats are represented in this set. I was particularly drawn to anything by Tennessee Ernie Ford (the choir backing vocals really adds to his already powerful performances), Ricky Scaggs And The Whites “The Wings Of a Dove,” Marty Stuart’s “The Old Gospel Special” played with his mother, and Willie Nelson’s ‘Family Bible.”

The best material is on the Grand Ole Opry discs with Loretta Lynn’s “In The Garden” and “Put Your Hand In The Hand,” Flatt and Scruggs “When The Saints Go Marching In,” Dolly Parton’s “My Tennessee Mountain Home,” and, of course, “Were You There (When They Crucified My Lord” by the legendary Johnny Cash and The Carter Family being the clear MVPs.

Of course, those that pick up this set may feel differently about which artists and performances made the biggest impression, but that’s the beauty of music no matter what genre it is. It speaks to people in different ways.

The 10 disc “Amazing Grace: Country Stars Sing Songs Of Faith And Hope” can be purchased on Time Life’s website here: https://timelife.com/products/AmazingGrace

Note: A 20 disc set is also available.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: Widescreen and Fullscreen. How does it look? The performances are culled from different points in time (and are pre-HD). As such, the video quality pretty much looks as is when it was aired and or released.

Audio Track: Unspecified. How does it sound? The audio may not be 5.1 and Atmos level by any means, but the performances sound clean here which is what matters.

Extras:
* 15 separate interviews with Alabama, Vince Gill, The Statler Brothers, Josh Turner, Jimmy Fortune (twice), Rhonda Vincent, The Oak Ridge Boys (twice), Marty Stuart (twice), Alan Jackson, Randy Owen, George Jones, and Dailey and Vincent.
* A booklet featuring written content about Country and Gospel music and a guide to the content of each disc.
