Pearl Blu-ray Review

Mia Goth shines in “Pearl.”

“Pearl” is a prequel to the horror slasher “X” (which came out earlier in 2022). In “X” we saw the murderous Pearl as an elderly woman. In “Pearl” we see the character in her youth. A third installment revolving around the Max character from “X” is currently in the works. Did you get all of that? Good. In “Pearl” the titular character is a Texas farm girl in 1918 who lives with her controlling mother and paralyzed father while her husband (Howard) is off serving in WW1. She yearns for more out of life and dreams to be a chorus girl. There’s something quite off about Pearl though as her behavior becomes increasingly more disturbing (to say the least).

Unlike the more slasher heavy “X,” “Pearl” is more of a character study. Sure, there are certainly slasher elements here as Pearl goes down a dark and bloody path, but this is more of an origin story about how Pearl became the creepy killer we saw in “X.” You really get into the deranged mindset of the character which makes for an unsettling experience that is perfectly pulled off by director Ti West (best known for “The Innkeepers” and “The House Of The Devil”) who also co-wrote the project alongside star Mia Goth. After a 6 year absence, it’s great to see one of the top tier indie filmmakers in Ti West return to the big screen. His unique horror stories are a breath of fresh air in the horror realm.

Going back to Mia Goth, she is fast becoming a rising star. She has real range and makes bold creative choices. It was already evident in “X” in which she played dual roles as Max and the older Pearl, but it’s really apparent here as this is Pearl’s movie through and through.

Note: The cover art and slipcover of this Blu-ray disc is for the Wal-Mart exclusive version.
