NCIS Season 19 DVD Review

Season 19 proves to be an eventful one for ‘NCIS.’

Leroy Jethro Gibbs, Timothy McGee, Nick Torres, Dr. Palmer, Kasie Hines, and Director Leon Vance return for the 21 episode 19th season. Storywise, fans can expect plots about the disappearance of Gibbs, a contract killer and the mystery behind those who hired him, FBI agent Alden Parker, Agent Jessica Knight, death investigations of everything from a Navy reserve to alleged suicides, Timothy’s mother-in-law, terrorists, undercover missions, a biotoxin, chemistry between Jessica Knight and Dr. Palmer and the return of the Raven.

The television landscape has changed dramatically over the years, but one thing that has remained constant for the past 19 years is the NCIS franchise. Watching it now, this procedural feels like a relic from another era, but fans wouldn’t have it any other way. You know what you’re getting when you flip on the flagship series- back-and-forths between NCIS agents, criminal and or death investigations and some interpersonal relationship storylines sprinkled in. You can argue there’s frequent stiff acting and wooden dialogue, but your mileage may vary on that.

The 19th season is an eventful one to be sure. The big talking point is the departure of one of the main cast members from the beginning with Mark Harmon’s Leroy Jethro Gibbs (which happens in episode 4 “Great Wide Open”). The episode, which was filmed in Alaska, is a fitting farewell to the character. Really though, it’s the first 4 episodes that are essentially one big serialized sendoff to the character. Other key events in this season are a crossover event with the new ‘NCIS Hawai’i’ series and the introduction of 2 new characters Jessica Knight (Katrina Law) and Alden Parker (played by Gary Cole of ‘Office Space’ and ‘The Brady Bunch Movie’ fame). Cole definitely brightens up the show even though he’s suited for something more comedic and challenging.
