Sonic The Hedgehog 2 4K UHD Review

‘Sonic The Hedgehog 2’ proves bigger is not always better.

‘Sonic The Hedgehog 2’ has no shortage of plot. Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) tries to be a vigilante hero but proves to be rather inept. Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter) venture off to Hawaii for Maddie’s sister’s wedding which doesn’t go as planned. Dr. Robotnik returns to Earth and decides to collaborate with Knuckles (Idris Elba) who is in search of the potentially dangerous Master Emerald. Robotnik plans to double cross Knuckles and take the relic for himself. Tails (superbly voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey) shows up on Earth to tell Sonic what is going on and the two embark on a journey to find the Master Emerald before it falls into the wrong hands. Secret agents known as G.U.N. have their sights set on Sonic (among others).

The first ‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ turned out to be a pleasant surprise and easily stands as one of the best video game movies. For the sequel Jeff Fowler returns to direct once again, but the second time is not the charm. This is very much a case of diminished returns. Despite the inclusion of fan favorite characters Knuckles and Tails (the latter of which is the best part of the movie) AND the return of Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik (who stole the first film), the sequel is tiresome and far, far too long (this is a 122 minute movie that should have been 90 minutes tops). The script by Jeff Casey, Josh Miller and John Whittington is overstuffed with plot. Do we really need the wedding storyline or Wade (Adam Pally) as the acting Sheriff subplot? No, no we do not. It just detracts from the main characters and the central story.

Jeff Fowler and company clearly wanted to make a sequel that is bigger in scope, but the spectacle overshadows everything. What made the first film work was the attention to character. The sequel crams in as much as possible (including a giant robot climax). It becomes so exhausting that it gets to the point where you might find yourself wishing for the movie to just end.
