Without Remorse Blu-ray Review

“Without Remorse” is in need of a better script.

Based on the Tom Clancy novel of the same name, “Without Remorse” revolves around the character of John Kelly (AKA John Clark) who is a U.S. Navy SEAL that has a pregnant wife. His world is turned upside down when is wife is murdered by Russian FSB operatives. From there on out, John Kelly tries to find out who is responsible for the death of his wife while also trying to determine what Russian-American crisis he has become caught up in. Is John Kelly being used by his own Government? Is there a traitor within the mix? All is revealed in the end.

Originally planned as a theatrical release before heading to Amazon Prime, “Without Remorse” is the type of film that should be better given the level of talent involved. It’s directed by Stefano Sollima (who helmed the underrated sequel “Sicario: Day Of The Soldado”) and written by Will Staples and the usually reliable Taylor Sheridan of “Yellowstone” fame. And yet the whole story comes across as a basic political thriller. Even the twists and turns aren’t likely to garner any interest.

With all of that said, ‘Remorse’ does have two things going for it with the action and the cast. The story may be standard, but the action is nothing short of intense. Stefano Sollima has a knack for ratcheting up tension and creating thrilling set pieces. The opening sequence, the airplane crash, the flaming car and the massive shootout in an apartment building will have you glued to your screen.

As for the cast, Michael B. Jordan continues to thrive as a leading man. It’s clear that “Without Remorse” was positioned as the start of a new franchise and while its future remains unclear, what is clear is that Jordan is the right man for the job. The rest of the cast includes Guy Pearce (whose presence always strengthens a movie), Jamie Bell, Brett Gelman (who is seemingly everywhere these days), and Jodie Turner-Smith. Everyone is perfectly cast here so props to the casing department.
