RiffTrax Live! Amityville: The Evil Escapes Blu-ray Review

“RiffTrax Live! Amityville: The Evil Escapes” ranks among the best live shows.

For those that might not be aware, “RiffTrax Live! Amityville: The Evil Escapes” was 2021’s Halloween special from the Belcourt Theater in Nashville in which riffers Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett (as Skeleton) tackle the fourth installment in the seemingly neverending “The Amityville Horror” franchise. Before they dive into that horror film stinker though, they riff on a short film titled “It’s Your Accident!” about a careless grump named Mike who has an industrial accident. More than that though, it’s about tomatoes as fruit (which becomes a hilarious running joke throughout the proceedings).

After the short, “Amityville: The Evil Escapes” (AKA “Amityville 4: The Evil Escapes” and “Amityville Horror: The Evil Escapes”) starts up. This Patty Duke starring entry begins with Priests trying but failing to cleanse the Amityville house in New York. As one might surmise from the title, the evil escapes in the form of a gigantic lamp which finds its way to an old lady (Alice) in California after an estate sale. The same day Alice’s daughter and her 3 children also move into Alice’s place. Shock of all shocks, the evil lamp begins to make bad things happen around the house.

Anytime you have a movie with an evil lamp, it’s tailor made for RiffTrax. Writers Conor Lastowka, Sean Thomason, Jason Miller and Zachary Shatzer, Michael J. Nelson, Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy go to town on this dopey horror flick as they crack wise about the on screen antics (the sewage scene is among the highlights) while also spouting jokes about everything from HGTV and Creed (the band) to Flint, Michigan and the hand trauma (you’ll see what that means). Of course, there are some savory callbacks to past RiffTrax AND “Mystery Science Theater 3000” episodes/movies throughout as well for the longtime devotees.

There have been numerous hilarious live specials over the years (“Birdemic” Live being their masterwork) and “Amityville: The Evil Escapes” is certainly a top tier show. There are simply some movies that are a match made in heaven for RiffTrax and this is one of them. It’s an all-around devilishly good time (pun intended) that will have you bursting into laughter more times than you can count. Pick this one up, folks.

“RiffTrax Live! Amityville: The Evil Escapes” is available to purchase on Blu-ray, DVD or Digital at the RiffTrax website here: https://www.rifftrax.com/rifftrax-live-amityville-the-evil-escapes?utm_source=homepage_carousel&utm_medium=Carousel&utm_campaign=video%20all%20%2881%29

Presentation: Fullscreen/Widescreen. How does it look? The short looks better than most shorts (which is saying something) while the ‘Amityville’ print is actually pretty pristine. The recording of the actual RiffTrax event is also crisp.

Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1. How does it sound? There’s a good balance between the riffing and the movie (and short) audio here which is all you can ask from a RiffTrax title.

The lone extra is the usual pre-show video which is one big spoof of pre-show trivia and facts that is accompanied by music of the RiffTones and others.
