Catwoman: Hunted 4K UHD Review

“Catwoman: Hunted” is far from purrfect.
“Catwoman: Hunted” is a new DC animated film directed by Shinsuke Terasawa. The story begins in Spain with Black Mask meeting with the criminal organization Leviathan during a costume party. Catwoman also attends said party in order to steal a valuable emerald (for reasons later disclosed). The jewel heist doesn’t quite go as planned as Catwoman becomes roped into a mission by Batwoman and Interpol. As if Catwoman didn’t have enough on her plate, Leviathan begins sending assassins after Catwoman (including League Of Shadows members).
The first 15 or so minutes of “Catwoman: Hunted” starts off promising enough as a jazzy stylish animated globe trotting action adventure with homages to anime, DC lore (including some retro moments), and Japanese gangster films (the work of Seijun Suzuki comes to mind). Unfortunately, it’s as if Terasawa and writer Greg Weisman let all of that fall to the wayside as the movie quickly devolves into a series of overlong set pieces involving a car chase, fights and random rogue’s gallery cameos. Not only is there little in the way of plot here, but it all just feels like a general waste of these characters. Catwoman deserved so much more for her own movie, but hey, at least it’s better than the live-action movie with Halle Berry.
The voice acting is generally good here with Elizabeth Gillies really making Catwoman her own. Keith David (Tobias Whale), Lauren Cohan (Julia Pennyworth), Kelly Hu (Cheshire) and Jonathan Frakes (King Faraday) also turn in quality work. The only miscast person here is Stephanie Beatrix as Batwoman. There just wasn’t enough energy to her rather stiff performance which is a shame as there was some solid banter between her and Catwoman.
Video/Audio:
Presentation: 1.78:1 2160p. How does it look? This is some of the best animation I’ve seen from DC lately and it looks superb in 4K.
Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? Despite the presence of a higher quality audio track, this 5.1 track does the job.
