Primal Season 1 Blu-ray Review

“Primal” is one of TV’s best kept secrets.

In the 10 episode debut season of Adult Swim’s adult animated series “Primal,” viewers follow the journey of a caveman named Spear and a T-Rex named Fang who form a bond after losing their families. This unlikely duo become good friends as they encounter snakes, mammoths, bats, Ape-Men, injuries, a virus, witches, a fast mysterious creature and a cavewoman.

After creating more kid friendly fare like the Hotel Transylvania series, Genndy Tartakovsky returns to making adult animated series in the vein of “Samurai Jack” with “Primal.” Much like he did in portions of the original Clone Wars series and “Samurai Jack,” “Primal” is a very visual series that features next to no dialogue. If that sounds intriguing, let me assure you it’s one of the many highlights of this series. In an era with fast talking animated characters, it’s refreshing to see a series that takes full advantage of animated visuals by focusing on the animated visuals to tell a story. And what a story it is. Who knew the pairing of a caveman and a T-Rex could make for some of the most compelling storytelling currently on TV? Between their run-ins with deadly animals and their moving friendship, you’ll be hard pressed not to be sucked into the world Genndy has created.

Going back to the visuals, the animation is simply first rate here. You could easily frame every single image in this show it’s that beautiful. Everything from the extremely violent battle to the characters walking through one of the many lush terrains is breathtakingly vivid and detailed. The entire animation team deserves praise for their work here as this is the best looking animated series out there right now.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 2.35:1 1080p. How does it look? The gorgeous animation shines in hi-def.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? The sound effects and music sounded sharp to this reviewer.

Extras include a Digital copy of season 1 and a 10 minute featurette titled “Behind The Scenes: Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal”
