V For Vendetta 4K UHD Review

“V For Vendetta” is more impactful now than it was in 2006.

Based on the DC comic book series by Alan Moore and David Lloyd, “V For Vendetta” revolves around the titular V- a blade wielding, monologuing, mad vigilante (with a dark past) that sports a Guy Fawkes mask. In addition to having his own personal revenge vendetta, V hopes to wake up the UK which is under a dystopian role by High Chancellor Adam Sutler in the year 2027. The two other key characters with storylines here are Evey and Chief Inspector Finch. Evey is a young woman that works for the British Television Network that is saved by V and is eventually drawn in to his plans. She undergoes quite a transformation upon getting to know him. Finch investigates V and Evey only to discover that things aren’t what they seem in the UK.

WB has wisely released “V For Vendetta” on 4K just before the fifth of November (Remember, remember) and Election Day for that matter. While I was a fan of the James McTeigue directed film upon its initial release, the sci-fi film has so much more weight in the year 2020 as it deals with Government oppression, propaganda, activism, blind followers, terrorism, politics, violence, art, a viral epidemic, homophobia, and riots. It’s rather eerie at how relevant the movie feels in this day and age and how it thematically means so much more now in these troubled times. Who knew the work of comic writer Alan Moore and scriptwriters the Wachowskis would turn out to be so prophetic?

The cast is aces here with Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving delivering some of their best work. Likewise, Stephen Rhea shines as Funch while the clever stunt casting of John Hurt as Adam Sutler worked well in that it’s a complete reversal of his “1984” role.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 2.39:1 2160p. How does it look? While not quite on the level of some of the recent WB 4Ks, this 4K transfer is nonetheless an improvement over the Blu-ray release (albeit a slight one).

Audio Track: Dolby Atmos-TrueHD. How does it sound? There is not a false note to be had here with this dynamite Atmos track. Note: There are multiple language options available.
Extras:
* Digital copy
* Blu-ray copy
* “James McTeigue And Lana Wachowski In Conversation”- A 13 minute discussion between the director and the writer/producer about the film
* Natalie Portman’s Audition and SNL rap.
* “V For Vendetta Unmasked”- A basic featurette with film clips, interviews, story and character discussions.
