The Owners Blu-ray Review

“The Owners” falls apart in the end.

Based on the graphic novel “Une nuit de pleine lune,” “The Owners” is a 2020 horror-thriller that involves 3 broke criminals (Gaz, Nathan and Terry) plotting to rob a Doctor and his wife (the Huggins). The girlfriend of Nathan (Mary) also gets roped into what should have been an easy score, but the robbery goes awry and the tables are turned on the would be thieves. Moreover, there seems to be something off about the Huggins. Are they hiding a dark secret? Are they not what they seem?

I’ll be honest, the casting of Maisie Williams (“Game of Thrones”) and Sylvester McCoy (“Doctor Who”) is what drew me to “The Owners.” I was curious what a movie starring those two would be like and I was equally intrigued to see the underrated McCoy in a starring role. The Julius Berg directed movie starts off promising as an intense, simple single location horror-thriller in which matters escalate with each passing moment. Alas, as is the case with many horror films and thrillers, the Geoff Cox, Julius Berg and Mathieu Gompel script loses steam midway through. The writers seem unsure of how to end this movie and indeed weirdly underplay a key moment at the end. To say it doesn’t stick the landing is an understatement.

As for the aforementioned Maisie Williams and Sylvester McCoy, they are the best parts of the entire movie. Williams shows range here as an unfortunate victim of circumstances while McCoy clearly relishes playing a creepy old Doctor.
