CBS DVD Round-Up

TV fans, take note! CBS has recently released 3 major TV titles to DVD with “Bull” season 4, “Penny Dreadful: City Of Angel” season 1, and “The Good Fight” season 4.

The first and only season of Showtime’s ambitious “Penny Dreadful” spin-off “Penny Dreadful: City Of Angels” takes place in 1930s Hollywood and involves a deity (Santa Muerte), a shapeshifting demon (Magda), Detectives, plots about murder, religion, gangs, Nazis, huamnity, and race. The 10 episode season (which boasts incredible production values I must say) stars Natalie Dormer (of “Game of Thrones” fame), Nathan Lane, Rory Kinnear, Kerry Bishe and Daniel Zovatto. While fans of the ‘Penny’ franchise will undoubtedly be bummed that this is all there is, it’s really a miracle such a big budget spin-off was ever greenlit. Maybe the series will find a new fanbase through DVD? Extras include featurettes titled “Introduction To Penny Dreadful: City Of Angels,” “The Many Faces Of Magda,” “The Dance Of Penny Dreadful: City Of Angels” and “The Devil Is In The Details Parts 1 and 2.”. Speaking of spin-offs, “The Good Fight” is also one (a spin-off of “The Good Wife” to be exact). The 7 episode season four of this CBS All Access legal drama revolves around lawyer Diane Lockhart (played by Christine Baranski) who works for the law firm Reddick, Boseman and Lockhart. Plots this season involve an alternate reality, court cases, the law firm being part of a bigger law firm (STR Laurie), politics, a mysterious memo, Jeffrey Epstein’s death (yes, it gets very real worldy this season), subplots involving the characters of Julius, Lucca, Adrian, among others. Last, but not least is another legal drama “Bull.” The CBS show centers around the character of Dr. Jason Bull (played by Michael Weatherly) who runs a jury consulting firm known as Trial Analysis Corporation. It is a season of change as Bull expects a daughter with his ex-wife, hacker Taylor finds love and loses a friend, Chunk having issues with his pregnant daughter, Marissa has issues with her marriage (again), and tension between Benny and Bull. The 20 episode fourth season also offers up plenty of case drama involving a whistleblower, a convict, a cosmetics entrepreneur,  a dancer who was raped, a boy murdering his brother, a paralyzed boy, self-defense, a teen wrestler’s death, a fertility mix-up, murder, kidnapping, anthrax, a train, an arrested Judge and more. Basically, if you’ve seen the previous 3 seasons you know what to expect here. Extras include a commentary on the episode “Labor Days” by Michael Weatherly, Freddy Rodriguez and Bethany Rooney, commentary on “Fantastica Voyage” by Michael Weatherly, and “Four Bagger” which is a video chat about season 4 with Glenn Gordon Caron, Michael Weatherly and Bethany Rooney.
