One Cut Of The Dead Blu-ray Steelbook Review

One

“One Cut Of The Dead” is a true gem.

This is a difficult review for me to write because I don’t want to reveal a single thing about this Japanese film. It’s best watched knowing as little as I did as it makes the viewing experience even more surprising and rewarding than it already is. Seriously, don’t even read the synopsis on the back of the Blu-ray! All you need to know is that it’s a “zombie comedy” and that there is a “movie within a movie” storyline. I’ve already said too much!

Although technically released back in 2017, “One Cut Of The Dead” received a U.S. release last year. Full disclosure- this was among my favorite films of 2019. This is not just another zombie movie. In fact, it’s much more than that. I am being vague here for a reason, but trust me when I say do not give up on this movie. The first half hour or so is a bit clunky, but there’s a reason for it. It all comes together in the end in an exceedingly clever way thanks to the superbly written script by Shin’ichiro Ueda.

Speaking of Ueda, he also directed this 96 minute feature and boy does he deserve all the credit in the world for making this movie come together like it does. There are so many pieces here that have to fit together just right tonally and from a storytelling perspective. And they do. I know, I’m being vague again. Just watch the movie!

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.78:1 1080p. How does it look? The picture quality is pretty irrelevant here but it’s a serviceable print.

Audio Track: Japanese and English 2.0 DTS-HD MA. How do they sound? The original language Japanese track is the way to go here as the English dub is pretty terrible.

Extras:
* 30 day free trial of Shudder
* DVD copy
* Photo gallery
* 4 ½ minutes of outtakes
* A quick 1 minute Pom! instructional video (you’ll know what this is once you see the movie)
* A 38 minute Go-Pro version of “One Cut Of The Dead.”
