FLCL: Progressive and Alternative Blu-ray Review

For “FLCL” fans.

“Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this blog post. The opinions I share are my own.”

After a long hiatus, the cult favorite anime series “FLCL” (AKA “Fooly Cooly”) returns with seasons 2 (Progressive) and 3 (Alternative) comprised of 6 episodes each season. In “Progressive” the story revolves a fragmented Haruko (an alien), a headphone wearing teen girl (Hidomi), a high school guy (Ide), and a villainous company (Medical Mechanica)). “Alternative” focuses on a new batch of characters (high school friends Kana, Pets, Mossan and Hijiri) who encounter Haruko and must deal with Medical Mechanica’s earth ending plot. There’s more story than just that, but I’m not here to spoil it all.

As someone who was not a first fan of the obnoxious first season, “FLCL: Progressive and Alternative” was not up my alley. Fans of the first series may be glad to go on a journey with the wild Haruko again, but to me, these new seasons added up to little more than a headache. Progressive in particular is a convoluted mess full of irritating character banter, robots, transformations, forehead objects, blaring music, frantic pacing, and plenty of other off the charts weirdness. It tries way too hard to be funny and unique.

I will admit that Alternative fares better as it is more focused. The core characters are developed well enough, the Medical Mechanica plot is a major through line, and there’s even some emotional coming-of-age moments involving future plans and fears. Sure, there’s still plenty of weirdness (see the giant hand with an iron) and the ending is nothing short of anti-climactic, but it’s a step above the chaos of Progressive at least.

Presentation: 16:9 1080p. How does it look? The animation shines in hi-def.

Audio Track: English and Japanese Dolby Digital 5.1. How do they sound? The English dub is passable. Stick with the Japanese track.
